Default 1965 radiator cap

This cap has been on my car for at least 20 years and I thought it was correct until I saw pictures of a 65 Iris mist convertible that Jim Mott restored. It scored like 997 out of 1,000 at the nationals so I can only assume it is 100% correct but the cap is different than mine. Then when I went to the Nationals in 2018 and saw Scott Tiemann's car, he had the same cap as I do and his car scored a crazy number also. Both Scott and Jim are among the best and most well known in the GTO world so whats the deal? The 1st picture is my cap and Scott's cap. The 2nd picture is the Jim Mott car.

I have this cap if you need/want it, like Mott's but needs the gasket on the larger brass disc.

Doesn't get the second rubber. That came into use when coolant recovery did. Back in 65-65 we dumped overflow onto the road.
When the spring released the seal out she went. Good old days.

I've been told from a friend of Jim Mott and mine that different plants had different caps, more than 1 supplier. Supposedly the cap on the iris mist car and if it belongs to Paul Kilker, was made in Pontiac and uses the cap in picture 2. Don't know what was used at other plants.

I agree with “Chief Vidan” explanation.

Several components of the Tempest Series cars had suppliers in key locations across the country to better serve the different factory’s.
Bumper jack assemblies were just one of these items.

I have seen several types of AC “Big Ear” radiator caps on many low mileage Survivor cars for decades.

The font is different, the location of information on the cap and different rivet styles.

The AC cap below was on my 65 signature car when I purchased it from the Original owner.

Chris.
