Competition Products still has the RPM 4340 H-beams for $349.95.

I do know that RPM has other I beams available for Pontiac, but I don't know the specifics.

I actually am a small dealer for RPM and have the 4340 H and I beam rods on hand amongst many other rods and cranks but this project doesn't require a 4340 rod.

RPM only has 4130 for sbf and sbc currently..... They did a few runs of them a year or so ago for a Pontiac parts supplier but wasn't enough demand so the dropped them.

Might just have to go with the 5140 rods.

I'm curious......Why not use the 4340? Cost isn't that different is it?

The 4340's are not much higher than the 5140's. So isn't the extra margin of safety worth a hundred bucks or so ?

I think the H-beams are also lighter, which is a plus. Some RPM H-beams and Auto-Tec pistons will make a good, light combo, which is hard to beat, for the price. IMO.

And, you can have the pin lowered, at no extra cost, to get closer to zero deck, rather than cutting so much off the block.

You also can have the advantage of the thin rings. All these things should be worth the small extra cost, to anyone who understands the advantages.

Also, keep in mind the problems that Cliff noted, with the 5140 rods.

My price for 5140 vs 4130 is about the same.
4340 price difference is about what I charge for a basic 3 angle valve job.

I was fortunate enough to up sell new rods after explaining to the customer it not a Mopar LOL

When I had Tomahawk Performance I was able to get the 4130 rods as a special order but had a minimum number of sets to order. I am not sure if they are still available or not. They were popular and a good rod never had a complaint.

I was talking to a machinist about this the other day. He suggested to mic the rod small end and the pin before assembly of each. As we were talking he was installing some press fit aftermarket rods on pistons.... There has to be a minimum interference fit between the rod and pin. Also with the ultra light pins available now, I would not use a press fit application rod. One has to remember that this is a replacement type application and intended with a thick pin that does not have a propensity to flex with a long stroke.

That being said, I have used quite a few sets of the 5140s and have had no problems with the intended use of a stock type upgrade.
