Default How much faster with a 200 shot of Nitrous?

I've been thinking about asking for a while. I may put a small ( by today's standards) nitrous kit on my Firebird. Its been 6.40 at 107 in the 1/8th. Any guesses based on experience, as to how much I should expect to pick up with a 200 shot? Assuming I can hit it within the 1st 60 feet. Ive got almost no experience with using nitrous. I know some basics of tuning it.

I'm old so ….. I remember my 69 GTO with a 455 #48 heads and at about 3800# race weight went from 10.89 t0 9.89 in the 1/4 with a 250 shot. My Firebird at 2900# race weight with a 535 went from 8.70's to 8.45 on a 250 shot. Disclaimer: The older I get, the faster I was.

You guys using a controller or just a switch. I dont think a controller would be necessary at only 200 shot.

I have done both... the controller is nice for delay and timing retard.
Not necessary but, you may as well get one because once you use the gas, you will want more...
It's much like a drug..

That could be true! I've also heard about using a higher fuel pressure / smaller fuel jet for better atomization.

I'd guess that you'd want the controller to find the earliest point the tires can take it, and get everything out of it. But certainly not mandatory.

Scott,
What would you call high fuel pressure?

OK, let me say I have never run nitrous and I understand that the hot setup continues to change.

A couple of years ago I saw Jack check / set his fuel pressure and I would not call it high.

Results vary based on the combo. If you just threw a 200 on it and changed nothing else but total timing you'll pick up X amount. If in addition you installed a tighter converter and a lower numerical ring & pinion, you'll pick up X+ amount.

I ran a tight converter and a 3,73 gear with 29" tall slicks. Naturally aspirated the converter made the car a pig in the 60' (it would only flash to about 3200 rpm). Launching on a full 200 hit it would "wake up" and flash to 4300-4400 rpm, allowing it to "leave on the cam".

At 3850 lbs. race weight I got the following best 1/4 results:

11.40 @ 120 n/a
10.19 @ 131 on a 200 shot

I always ran the fuel pressure at 6-1/2 PSI to the nitrous system solenoid with it's own proprietary fuel pump and line. I always pulled 8 degrees out of the total timing. I ran the mechanical advance locked in the distributor and used the "start function" in the MSD box to pull 20 degrees out so it would start. I usually ran between 32-34 degrees locked naturally aspirated. I also tried to leave with the n2o bottle pressure at 1000 psi. The nitrous solenoid was wired with a WOT switch and was all there on launch.

And read your plugs, you may find even with a 200 shot you may have to go one range colder (maybe two) from naturally aspirated.

That's the only way my junk went fast. Less weight. …… All my combo's were on a N/A combo so my times could be improved, as mentioned above by Brian, if I ran the right converter etc.

Our first outing with the Grocery Getter in 1996 got us a 9.99 ET (1/4 mile) NA.
Our next outing, we added nitrous....I think about 175 hp....and ran an 8.99.

FWIW:

The wife's car is mainly set-up for NA bracket racing and runs consistent 6.90's/11.0's around 121-122 mph (only run qtr mile a couple times a year) with 3.73gears on a 275/60 or 28x9 tire with a somewhat tight converter. For Dragweek, we've sprayed a max of 125hp right at the 1-2 shift pulling 6 degrees (so there is no risk of hurting anything nor having to make any changes to the current set-up with the car outside of pulling a little timing) and the car has run 10.30's@ 131mph relatively consistent in sh#tty conditions.
Last years event when the weather actually improved at the track for the friday night Q32 race, the car would have probably ran mid teens on the same 125 shot but she was pedaling hard for 3 of rounds. A lot of variables though, including the driver. If we sprayed a 150-175 shot, the car would easily run into the higher 9's. I would guesstimate 9.80's. The car really only picked up about 400rpms in the traps with her shift point changing from 6000 to 6200 in 3rd gear.

In the late 80's my 65 with a 428-670 heads 2500 conv. ran 13.00.
Left foot off the brake, left foot on the nitrous switch right outta the gate, 11.79.
With the original 5/16" gas line.

I bought a progressive controller ( Thanks Mark ) and will be gathering a few more things I need. I need to run a dedicated fuel system, do the wiring and get a new plate and solinoids. Leaning towards buying a Big shot upgrade kit from NOS. Includes the plate, nitrous solenoid and #6 line for the nitrous. Then buy the fuel solenoid

My friends Nova ( set up for spray, cam, gapped rings...) 12.80 no spray, on a 200 shot car went 10.79.

My other friends sb2 Nova went 11:30 no nitrous, hit it with 200 went 10.30

It all depends on the set up. the motor and driveline. Just try it, but get a/f gauge to make sure your safe on the tune. Pull plugs right after the 1st run.
