Default 74 GTO automatic console question

On the automatic console for a 74 GTO. Why doesn't it have a shift indicator next to the shifter? Steve

I know that it's hooked up to the shift indicator in the dash bezel. I believe the column rotates as if it had the shift lever up there. I don't know why they did this, probably had to due with the reverse lockout or backup lights.
