Default Heater box

I pulled the heater box out to replace the heater core, and it looks like there is a little rust in there from the old one leaking. This is a 1970 Lemans without air. It's rusty in the area you can't really get to underneath where the core is mounted. I reached down as far as I could and wiped it off with a towel and there wasn't much that came off. Do I need to clean this off or try and paint any of the interior of that box? I thought about trying to get some POR 15 or the dupli-color equivalent in there over the surface rust, but would be tough to get it all covered well since I can't really reach in there.

I was worried if it was rusty and dirty that it would be blowing all that out at us in the car, but after trying to clean it I'm thinking it might be ok. Curious if anyone has had one of these fully apart or not. Assuming it's spot welded from the factory and I fear I will wreck it if I try and disassemble it.
