Default Diff Between '69 and '70 RA IV Carb Pan

Can anyone tell me what the difference is between the '69 and '70 RA IV Carb Pan? I've been told that one of them had holes drilled in it to enable adjustment of the RA V carb while the pan was installed on RA V motors.

Default ra iv pans

A 70 pan has a provision for the 70 model calif bowl vent (approx 1/2 around by 3/4 tall) in the front of the carb which became standard an all rochesters in 71. a 69 has no such provision. This had nothing to do with holly's.

The largest difference is that the 70 has "bumps" both in the front and the rear. I have always understood that this was to clear a Holley carb. Maybe Henley has it right, but this is what I have always read. Anyway, that should help you recognize one. I found one of these pans for the 70 Judge that just sold on Mecum.

If the 70 bowl vent is only on the front of the carb, why are the pan's "bumps" in both the front and rear?

There may be another smaller difference, but I do not remember one.

I believe I remember a hole in the pan for this vent that was plugged with a small rubber plug. True, that has nothing to do with a Holley carb, but I assume that the bumps do. These bumps are not on a 69 pan either.

I believe the bumps are there because the Holley was originally considered for use on the RA IV SD motor in 70 and the bumps were needed to clear the corners of the carb.

Same bumps and plugged hole appear in the 70 RA Formula pans.

If I get a chance, in the next week or so, I will post a pic of an original pan of each year. The dimples in the 70 pan were for the potential use of the Holley carb and the hole (which has the rubber plug in it for 49 states) is as stated by Henley for the California bowl vent. These California carbs used in 1970 had the same bowl vent found on 1971 and 1972 carbs.

Guys,

Thanks for the input. Your responses have confirmed for me that I have a '69 pan, which is what I need. After having read several articles in magazines, I was convinced that I had the wrong pan.

Thanks again,

Pat
