67 Firebird 326 HO 4 speed 2 years old $1700.
65 GTO 4 speed needed a transmission and a hood, minor cosmetic damage, 7 years old, $75.
70 Judge 4 speed RA III, engine was using a little oil due to the fact it was driven with no air cleaner. Came with a used 65 389, slight ding LF fender, $500, car was 5 years old.
73 GTO 455 automatic, hit in the front needed front clip $200. car was 5 years old.
69 GTO 400, 350 HP, auto loaded, broken pushrod, car was 4 years old $1200.
65 GTO 389 4 speed 3.90 axle metallic brake option, car originally was a tri power car and it was loaded for a 65 GTO, engine was pretty worn out, car was 6 years old $800.
65 GTO convertible 389 4 speed with a stack of engine builders receipts, car was 7 years old, $1200. Thought I got a great deal until the cylinder wall collapsed because it was bored .060 over (65 thin wall castings) and it destroyed the engine after 9 days of ownership.
66 LeMans Sprint 6, 3 speed running driving, car was 11 years old, $35.
73 T/A 455 auto, loaded car, but was wrecked, needed front clip and subframe, I still own it. Car was 5 years old, I bought it for the storage fees on it, $800.
73 Grand Am, 400 4 speed car, only 17,000 miles on it, the car lot couldn't sell it because of the 4 speed, 2 years old $2800.

OK. Here's the "Ripleys" story. And they wouldn't believe it either.

In 1969 I bought a 62 Cat 4-door sedan. $50. The owner said the motor was knocking & the tranny was shot. I towed it home and took it apart. The engine code said 389 2-barrel. After pulling the oil pan I saw 4-BOLT main caps. The crank measured 3.25.
I looked around to make sure there was a 2-barrel intake & carb....yep.
But 2 of the main caps were broken between the small & large bolts. Hence the knock.
I junked it all. "That"s my true story".

In 1973 I bought a mint, stock 67 Chevelle SS 396 auto. for $800 bucks!
Had it a year and totaled it.................

Bought my 72 Sport ragtop after that.

I stupidly passed on a 69 Camaro Indy pace car convert. rep.
350 auto $2400
I also passed on a odd stripper 68 Camaro.
It had a funny hood scoop on it and a spoiler on the rear.
It had a 427 engine and a 4 speed and had SYC printed on the headrests
and some cheezy Yenko badges and 427 emblems on the front fenders and
rear taillight panel.
Price ???? $2400

I later saw the Yenko parked in a yard and was told the owner was in the service
and out of country. I was also told the car was sold to Reggie Jackson for his
collection.

Didn't have a clue about the car in pre computer age days !
To think what that car is worth today!

I think about $800 in 1982. I bought a 1970 Challenger R/T with a burnt orange paint job with glitter all over it. Not metal-flake. Glitter. It was cool for the time.

In 1970 I wanted to trade in my 69 firebird it was only a year old & my dad said I should keep it as it was so new. My mom worked for a plymoth / chrysler dealer as the bookeeper & when it came in I had to have it. I took a test drive with my dad & he said no you'll kill yourself with it besides you just got the bird. The car I wanted & test drove was a 70 HEMI CUDA red with black interior, 4 spd car. It would have cost me $ 65.00 a month. But my dad said no at that time, that how I had to wait to order the new 455SD 73 GTO that never came in. Then in 1986 we were shopping at a collector car lot (with my dad) & we saw a 70 HEMI CHALLANGER & my dad in his wisdom said wow the car was priced at $ 82000.00. He looked me in the eye & said if I would have known you were going to keep such good care of your cars I would have let you buy the CUDA back then. Hind sight is a bitch. Dads gone now & so is the CUDA.

Actually, we paid $3100 for our '63 Catalina:

That car was taken from us and we were given our '64:

So I guess you could say we paid $2300 for the GTO (...in 1963...).

Interesting explanation Keith, you could hardly loose on the trade in value or new car depreciation on a deal like that, LOL

Do you have any idea of what happened to your dads cars that he traded back?
Also, what happened in 1966 that there was no new car?

The '63 had the aluminum front end removed to repair another car and then our car was scrapped.

The '64 was sold, complete with all our speed tricks and equipment (tow bar brackets, suspension mods, slicks in the trunk). Supposedly someone "back east" (Connecticut or somewhere) purchased the car. It could still be out there.

Dad did not like the '66s as well as the '65 so he left the GTO at home when he went down to look at them. He ended up running a '66 OHC Sprint for that year (got it into the 12's) and then gave it back. We didn't really own that one so I never include it in the chronology.

We ran our car in '67 in B/Modified Production, which allowed better heads, the later tripower and wider 9" slicks. The car went 12.20 in this configuration and is essentially how it sits today.

For '68 we got a Silver or Springmist Green GTO, with black painted up around the back window and on the decklid. That was our last Pontiac, as Dad was getting a bit soured on the whole deal with Royal.

We also had a Grenadier red '64 Lemans, which had been a Milford Proving Ground mule car. It had a 421 in it and was actually quicker than the GTO race car. We purchased that one but I don't think I ever heard what the purchase price or arrangement was.

Dad loved that setup because he could get out of the tow car and into the racecar and everything was exactly the same: same steering wheel, same seat, same clutch, same shifter, etc.

I have dozens that I just don't want to remember. But two stick out in my mind. One was in 1969 when I was was 16. Someone traded in used up 65 GTO at the Plymouth Dealership I was working part-time at. The owner had parked it on the back line while trying to figure out what to do with it. It was Nightwatch Blue, 4 speed, had 3 carbs, and had a set of 'funny' looking wheels like I had never seen before. The engine was smoking and it needed painting. I told the owner of the dealership I would pay him $400 if he would let me pay him $20 a week out of my pay. Done deal! I'm ashamed to tell what I did with the car and with the Hurst wheels.

The other one is a 73 Brewster Green SD TA that I bought just after the stock market crash in 1989. It had the original paint with saddle interior and automatic with air. Nice original but needed a respray and detail. I gave $6500.
