Well I got the car up on jack stands to look for trans #'s and saw what looks like a hole in the oil pan.
It looks like it froze and swelled ! The bottom of the oil pan is swelled out and round. So in full disclosure the engine could be completely ruined. It got dark on me I'll investigate more tomorrow.
The number i found on the trans is 392566 from looking online it should have a 1 or 0 on the end i must have overlooked it. The tail shaft # is 3978764. If anyone wants this car make me a offer.

I came across a swelled out oil pan on a motor which sat for many years exposed to the elements. Turned out to be ok, but to be sure you could pull the intake manifold to look for cracking in the lifter valley.

VIN stamp on Transmission should be on the pass. side pad just forward of the tailshaft verticaly.I am watching the auction with interest but you will need to confirm that it is indeed an M-22 and the motor is not grenaded if you want to get anywhere close to the $ you are looking for.

I can look for the numbers tomorrow. As far as the motor being grenaded I haven't seen a rod hanging out of it but it is for sure locked up
I dont really want to pull the heads and intake but i might if it don't sell on ebay.

I never thought about storing my care in a bath of salt water to keep the rodents out. Very interesting...

Thanks. Someone will buy it sooner or later or I'll part it out.
Or i'll find a decent old firebird and build a clone.
I know this thing is rough as hell but it still is a matching numbers 71 4spd trans am.

With the right amt of rustfree sheetmetal & quality metal work, sure the T/A can be restored, but will it have anything close to an original born with drivetrain. Both factors are what drive a selling price. the car needs to be moved onto concrete the engine & transmission carefully pulled. With engine & trans out, the full extent of damage can be examined, only then can a prospective restorer know what he is buying..

-freeze cracked block(?)
-cylinder bores so rusty that multiple cylinders will need sleeves(?)
-cylinder heads with several chambers that are heavily rust pocked(?)
...the pic of the front of the drivers side cyl head where it mates to the exhaust manifold show serious rust damage.
-correct distributor(?) can it be removed without destroying it (?)
-carburetor, is it a water dog(?) base of fuel bowl corroded(?)
-M22...is it the original matching M22(?)
have had quite a few 455 HO projects, have even had an original M22 that was prev rebuilt with a no ring M21 input shaft & gear set. to confirm what one has, the side cover has to come off.

All of the above come into factor. If quite a few major components ck out, your chances of selling this anywhere near the price range you're asking is many times improved.

Thanks. I know what your saying that's why i came down on the price and yes the carb was exposed to the elements and the linkage and throttle plates are stuck.
If i go to the trouble of pulling the thing apart i will part it out that's why its still together. as far as the body goes It looks worst than it probably is I winched it out and loaded it on a rollback it didn't break in half.

How are the numbers on the Vin plate? Are they still legible? Was the car originally a tan standard interior?

Yes vin is still readable
Body tag reads
St 71. 22387nor05601 bdy
Tr 203 11 11 pnt
09

If any of you can tell any thing by this let me know
I think the 11 11 is white
And the 203 is saddle interior

Interesting. A Norwood built Trans Am trim tag would have WS4 stamped on it to denote trans am. This one does not??

203 indicates standard saddle interior
11 11 indicates cameo white bottom and top color.

Can you please PM me the following numbers:
1) stamped into the block on the front right hand side just below the head
2) stamped vertically on the driver side of the carburetor
3) numbers letters stamped on both sides of the valve stem on the rims. \\

Thanks
