Not sure what color gear you’ll need but I believe you’ll need a speedo adapter when running 4:33 gears. Then the ratio of the gears inside the adapter will determine what color (the number of teeth) you need. When I went from 3:23 gears to 3:90 that’s what i had to do.

I believe you need the 20 teeth, yellow color. This is used with the m21 close ratio 4 speed. No adapter is indicated.

Yellow 20 tooth is for the G70 and G78 tires in 1970 (as mentioned above...)
My 68 has the Orange 19 tooth gear which is correct for G77 tires according to my book. No adapter used in either of those years. |

thx everyone, researching further it is the yellow. Any idea where to get one? Ames does not show and I called to confirm. Also, in the resto book it does say an adapter is needed for 3.90 and 4.33's . GiPper, where did you get your adapter?

I ordered my adapter from GM via one of their dealers however that was back in about 1987. Check your resto book and see if the adapter is for automatic transmissions (which is what I have)? My old GM parts book shows an adapter is for a Turbo 400 trans and there is no adapter shown for the 4sp.

What is the tooth count of the gear that is in it now? You will need fewer teeth on the driven gear (the one on the outside of the transmission) to slow the speedometer down. The drive gear, attached to the output shaft inside the tail-shaft can also be changed, affecting the number of teeth needed on the driven gear. It seems odd that with 4.33s you are reading fast on the speedometer.
