Default 1965 tripower

Hi everyone. Couldn't find an answer to this, so I'm asking here. Will a '65 tripower fit a '66 and later engine??? If so, how much later?? Is there much difference, if any, between the '65 and '66 tripowers?? Thank you, Carmine.

Sorry, forgot to mention that the center carb on the 66 tripower is the larger base.

Also go to Mike's tripower to get tons of info.
Also Dick Boneske on this site is also a wealth of info.

I have '65 carbs and intake sitting on '68 #16 heads, which sit on a '70 400 block.

It will fit all the way up to the EGR years.

The '65 Tripower will fit all Pontiac engines from 1965 through 1979 except for the 301/265 versions.

The later cylinder heads, however, sometime in the '70's, have a larger passage for the heat riser passage. There are gaskets available to cover the hole and makes the '65/'66 Tripower swap a breeze.

Yes, it well fit to '79 but I saw no need to get into the BS details. I had one on one of my '77 GP SJ's way back when. However, there was more to it than just gaskets. I did not mention the 301 because.... well.... who considers a 301 a Pontiac engine? Not me.

OK guys. My question was answered about fit. Isn't the top center carb, on the '65 tripower, smaller then the one on the '66?? Does this affect anything or even matter?? Would the cfm be the same of both?? Thank you, Carmine.

Not just the top, the whole carb, therefore CFM is different along with everything else.

OK. Last question. I promise. Is there anything wrong with putting a tripower center carb. from a '66 onto a '65 intake?? Thank you, Carmine.

Although the 1966 center carb has a larger throttle-bore, 1-11/16", compared to '64 and '65 carbs with a 1-7/16' throttle-bore, the venturi size is smaller on '66.

Center carbs of 1964 and 1965 Tri-powers have 1-1/4" venturi, whereas the 1966 center carb has a 1-3/16" venturi.

I think this means the '66 will flow less CFM. Someone can chime in and correct me if I am wrong on any of the above.

I will build one of those when I am ready to build an HT4100, Northstar or odd-fire V6. There is more but I am sure you get my point.

Perhaps someone can post up a bare '65 and a bare '66 intake. You can clearly see the difference. Had I had read this earlier I would have snapped some but now it will have to wait until this time tomorrow.

So what you are saying is that you do not know what GM engines to stay away from. I was around when the 301 was out. Like the Cadillac HT4100, as soon as word got out what a POS these engines were, Pontiac dealers could not give them away and did not want them. The very popular T/A died on dealer's lots if they had a 301. And like Caddy dealers when a customer wanted to trade in a Caddy with a Northstar, Pontiac dealers cringed when a customer came in with a 301 car. I remember dealers calling them 50,000 mile cars, because you were lucky to get that out of them. Yes, there were a few (very few) exceptions like a guy I know with a 95,000 mile Grand Am or another guy that got 126,000 out of his 301 but its pretty sad when you have to think hard as to a 301 getting over 50,000.

That is why any Pontiac guy around here doesn't consider a 301 when talking Pontiac engine history. I liken it to a bastard child with its Papier-mâché crank.

Tri-Power intake ID thread we've all seen before, you're not going to find much better pictures to see the difference between the two most popular ones ('65 & '66):https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...d.php?t=786314

Well, I'm sure when someone says you can't or shouldn't, someone will. I was the same way when I started racing GM overdrives 20+ years ago. I still do not consider a 301 a Pontiac and would trust an Olds diesel first.
