Backdrive linkage bracket (72 GTO w/TH400)
Backdrive linkage was removed by previous owner, kept everything except the bracket that goes on the frame. So I bought an 'incorrect' looking bracket from a well known supplier, thinking it would work, it just doesnt look the same as the original. Well, something's wrong here. See how the spring is compressed? I'm thinking the bracket angle must be wrong maybe?
Everything lines up though, so I'm pretty sure I have the correct linkage/rods. Anybody else had the same problem with that repro bracket? It says its correct for any A-Body from 69-72. Inline Tube sells the correct bracket, I wont buy another bracket until I know what the problem is... I would appreciate if somebody could measure the rod that goes to the transmission. Between the red lines. Thanks |

It may not be a completely accurate comparison (mine is an M13 car), but the back drive assembly seems the same. You're right that yours seems to be compressing the spring too much, almost like the bracket is too long. I can take measurements on mine tomorrow, but for now, here's a couple pictures of my installation.
Hope it helps.

Ha, maybe I should have been more clear? I was standing by my 72 A body that was on a lift and measured the back drive rod where you marked in red, and it measured 6”. So, my rod measures 6”. Someone else’s rod may vary.

I got 6", so its the correct rod. That reproduction bracket is incorrect then.

A quick update;
I bought an original bracket from a member here. As you can see, that reproduction bracket advertised as 'Correct for 68-72 A-Body cars' is totally wrong. Not sure what car it fits, but it clearly doesnt belong in a Pontiac A-Body. The angle and shape is incorrect. No wonder why it doesnt fit. |
