I say, good enough for him, more than good enough for me. All these aftermarket starters are gear reduction and will turn the engine over slower than a stock starter. If you bend a non nose supported mini starter you have a big and very high CR engine. Or something else went wrong, too much advance ect. A lot of guys start cranking their engine, then light the ignition off after it is already spinning. My cranking compression went down by a good 20lbs going from the long 455 factory starter vs the Summit. |

I've ran the Powermaster for five seasons with zero issues. Four seasons on a 10:1 motor and this last season on a 13:1 motor.

IMI on all my or son's tweaked engines/cars.........many Pontiacs (now only a 462 cid), AMC (413) and Oldsmobile (407).
Never any issues so far and great customer service. *They helped "custom" make a version for a 'newer' Jeep / AMC V8 / Torque Command engine / trans swap.

Tildon on my 78 since late 80s. Repaced a solenoid over the years. I did have to drill and tap to reclock it to clear the headers better.
Tried a Summit on the 81. had to clock it upside down to clear the RA exhaust manifold and it was toast after about 6 months. The 500IA has a RobbMc on it.

RobbMc with pinion support. 535 with 16 to 1 at 16 volts with a locked distribution and start retard (all considerations) spins quick and free even when hot.
Used an IMI for years on 474 at 11 to 1 and 462 at 12.5 to 1 successfully. For current combo switched to the RobbMc because it was clockable ( need that feature in my application) and pinion support for bigger cubes and compression. |

So, I guess what I am asking is that for a mild compression ratio (eventually aluminum head, 10.5:1 cr), Pro Flo4 fuel injected, non-race car, long branch HO manifold equipped street beast, less than 500 cubic inches, does anyone think that the unsupported nose of a Summit starter (or similar types) will be a problem in a manual transmission '69 GP? In addition, I will definitely have a jumper wire on the solenoid and use an external solenoid to supply power to the starter.

Went to a Powermaster Ultra-Torque 9410 and it’s worked good for 3 years now. It’s a permanent magnet type and has more balls than the PM XS series or the Summit but does cost a bit more

I think it would appear that this Summit starter should be fine for my application, and when it eventually goes, I will probably replace it with a starter from: https://www.robbmcperformance.com/index.html Thanks for the replys!

IMI Just 10:1 compression. When I was changing engines I misplaced the starter bolts, I couldn't find them anywhere and I couldn't find replacements either. I called IMI and in a few days a new set of bolts came free of charge. I will never use another starter as long as IMI is in business.
