Dyno testing a Gutsram?
Just wonderibg if anyone has ever tested a Gutsram vs Victor or BOP intake?

I know it's not what you're looking for but I know Butler tested a Gutsram intake against one of their sheet metal fabricated intakes a few years back. They said it was basically a wash. Pretty even across the rpm range. Pretty surprising.

High probability that Rick did test that Gutsram intake after Randy took back the Special Intakes he had made for Joe, Larry, Rick, and others, Tom.

I tested 3 of Randys intakes early on,one had flat floor like originals, one had V plenum like a guts ram and one had V plenum but had oval inlet track holes going into rectang to the heads. They all made within 5 HP of each other on a 461 E headed engine, same day same dyno.Sent them back to Randy with results.FWIW,Tom

Not the same things but I built a pair of 750 cfm sd clone carbs for a fellow named Tom Karpenko ten or twelve years ago for a 496 cubic inch engine and he dynoed it with both sd bathtub and 9770859 inline sd dual quad intakes. I don't recall the hp and torque #s but the bathtub made only slightly more power (10hp and torque or so as I recall) than the 859. The big difference was the torque curve with the bathub having a wide long peak torque where the inline had a typical mountain peak to it. He also put a pair of Edelbrock 750 cfm carbs with the same calibration as the AFBs on both intakes and dynoed them. They made slightly less power than the AFBs.

It made 622 hp and 605 tq.. it had 980 heads on it...

Thank you that's Tom's car with him driving? That is a 2017 video and the carbs were built long before that and talking to him since then I'm under the impression his first pass was in 2010, 2008?? not sure but way before 2017.
I came back and edited this - I checked my records and I shipped those carbs to Tom in January of 2010. Last edited by 61-63; 07-27-2020 at 06:06 PM. |

I have tested the Original Wenzler TR the Gutsram and a Victor all back to back in various forms on one of my 421 combo's but at the track not on a Dyno. All were ported to match my 345 CFM std pushrod location Eheads. 4.185 Bore X 4.050 stroke. Stock Suspension, Heavy Car 3750lbs. Both Tunnel Rams had Carter AFB Competition 750's per NMCA NSS Rules. Victor had a 1000cfm Pro Systems.
Quickest passes for each- Victor Best pass 10.12 with 1" Super Sucker Spacer Original Wenzler TR Best Pass 9.85 With homemade flat top. 1/2 homemade wood spacer, 1/2 shear plate. Gutsram- Best pass 9.95 with a 9/16 Delrin Plenum Spacer, 1/2 shear plates. I tried many different type spacers from tapered to open to 4 hole on each intake. My small heads and CID didn't like the Gutsram as much but feel Wideports would work great with it. I had to add a good bit of epoxy to match by baby ports. The 1/2 shear plates with a wood spacer underneath was worth a solid .10 on the original TR and .06 on the Gutsram vs the flat top.

Tom and I were on the dyno the same weekend, I just looked at my dyno sheet and the date was 6/24/2010... He built a beautiful aluminum Catalina... he took his time and hit the track once in a while, he was having problems with his clutch set up.... he just wasn't familiar with it.. so yes I'm sure he made passes before 2017, I'm guess that is maybe when the video got uploaded? Not really the info you want but I just had my Gutsram converted to a Blower intake for my 8-71 by Don Hampton...should be in by tomorrow I hope. I had it done because my BDS intake won’t match well to my Wide Port heads...

Currently setting up a gutsram to test on 458 mule motor . Made 581 with victor abut 550 tq this is a motor I built twenty years ago and i drug it out from under the bench and slapped a set of mildly ported ed's on it to be used for testing in my gasser. I had to shrink up the ports on both manifolds as the were used on much larger ports. should be testing next week.

Cool please keep us posted.
But not sure Gutsram is well suited for your build |

I do not remember the actual MPH numbers from each. I had it on a spread sheet but had a computer crash.
If I remember correctly the Original TR was a little faster (maybe 2) MPH wise on my combo. But I do have small ports and small CID.

Slow bird I realize its probable too big for this application but I already have it . Made a dual carb top for it with spacer and am going run 2 650 edelbrocks. total volume of the plenum will be about 264 ci.

Len,I think you will need more carb than a pair of 650s!Tom

You do something to shrink the plenum? I thought stock it was mid 300ci?

Tom you may be right but I got these carbs cheap so I'm going to run them. If I see it dropping off around 6000 I'll know they are to small. Slowbird I made a custom top for it with room to grow so yes it probably has a little less volume than the wenzler top.
Len C Oh ya forgot to tell you I'm a cheapskate!!!! |
