Default When was the last time a 1962 421 super duty ran at a NHRA event in Stock ?

Does anyone know the last time a 1962 421 super duty ran as a stocker or super stocker at a NHRA event?

I too, have asked this question.

Please post the driver name, or at least the division the car competed in. Or maybe a particular nat event.

When I read that 12-15 years number, I started lookin at some DRC lists from 2005 division races. I found that Truman Fields was living in Florida & still racing the '68 Bird. Also found that J.B. Clegg drove the Clegg '74 T/A Stocker, at least once. Decided that there are far too many DRC lists to look thru, hoping to find a car I've never noticed before.

Need a driver name and/or division and/or particular race, in order to narrow the search a bit. With some info like that, I'll be glad to do the search, since I'm interested in the answer myself.

Since the Stock hp factor was changed at the end of 2002, it would make sense that somebody was running one, or planning to run one.

I cant imagine running a set of those heads these days, just too valuable and WAY hard to find a untouched set for stock.I think their only choice is 306,127 and maybe 980s.I think Joe from the parts place has a set for sale for about 5K.Just too many other combos that would be better IMO.I drive a 62 421.Tom

Yes the parts are hard to find and expensive. I did get the 421 in the car for the final Div. 5 event in Great Bend KS this last weekend. It ran a 11.73 on a 11.87 index Sunday during eliminations . I have more work to do.

Did a DRC search for the word "Catalina".

Found a '77 Catalina wagon, which I'd never heard of, that ran more than a sec under. Also found a '63 Cat S/G car.

But, Norman's car is the only '62 Cat Stocker that shows up.

Here's a Q-list where Norman was running E/SA. 11.759 Guessing these cars were only running low 12's back in the '60's. If I find one that ran 11's, I'll mention it. Guessing that Norman & Carroll will wrench quite a bit more out of this 421SD.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2020#indextop

Reckin the previous 421SD car in question could have run some sort of Nostalgia class, rather than Stock ?

Back in '63, these cars were running low 13's to high 12's. At the '63 NHRA Nationals, Bill Abraham won A/SA, with a 13.28, & Don Gay won A/S, with a 12.81. Some guy has posted that Don Gay's car was not legal & was DQ'd at some races. I have no idea.

This may be the quickest 421SD Stocker from the old days. Don't know. It was a record holder. Was running C/SA, in this pic. Also have pics of it, running D/SA. Have no idea what was the quickest time ever from a 421SD Stocker, in competition.

I already posted the specs, from the Class Racer Info site.

http://www.classracerinfo.com/Engine...6&MAKE=Pontiac

Factory was 405hp. As of 12/19/02, NHRA was 385hp, for Stock. Have no idea if this info is current, or not.

After you posted the 350HO pistons you got approved, this site had no mention of them, and still don't. The only piston listed is the old TRW L2339. So, there's no telling how accurate the info on that site is. But, I assume Norman has the current, correct info, directly from NHRA.

the motor in the car is a legal stocker motor Untouched heads, #127 . I have seen a picture of a 1962 Catalina running ES/A dated 1972. Has anyone run one since then? NHRA has the motor at 385hp. The car with me has to weigh 4020 in ES/A.

Not sure why the piston info hasn't been updated. He does have the head casting number and the runner volumes included for the head I submitted to NHRA a few years ago.
Sweet car Norman, going to Vegas in a few weeks?

Very nice car. Impressive with weight. Who helped you with camshaft -selection? Just wondering as I want to change cam in my 73 SD,I built car as F/SA but never did race any national events.
I think Don Gay SD car was disqualified for some reason with exhaust like muffler type, stock versus glaspack. They were picky back then.
