73 T/A Saddle interior dye
Would you guys have any idea on the correct dye for a 73 saddle interior? I got a can of dye from Ames that's supposedly correct for a 73, but it's really light, almost like a later tan interior.
I grabbed a can of saddle for a 70 hoping it'll be darker, but I haven't sprayed it yet. What say PY?

My car is gutted and all seats and trim are on benches... Maybe even a pic of the sprayed dye u got from Ames???? No matter what u get get enough to do ALL the interior cause it’ll never match anything previously.... I’ve kinda asked around on here and there seems to be different shades of saddle year to year as well....

Like Sandalwood, Saddle is different colors and shades on different substrates. My cars, the seats were always a bit darker brown than any other part of the interior. Due to this, I never tried to match panels to the seats.

73 saddle....is all by itself.......
It has more red in it than 72.....and different than 74.....which is lighter I would say a custom SEM mix....might get you close....but factory seats and door panels had a faint black mottling in the vinyl.... Saddle in 73........Red in 75....and blue in 76........were all mottled....and I doubt that it can be duplicated correctly....with a spray.... You can always tell a reproduction 73 saddle interior....because it's NEVER correct... I did this one about 20 years ago.......Upper door panels are original....and had the drivers seat repaired with 2 other donor seats covers.......I matched the replacement carpet to the original.....The orange is a nice contrast to saddle seats,etc... AFAIK......Vinyl DYE....does not exist.....SEM is actual vinyl PAINT. |

That looks almost as dark as the dark saddle on my 70.

The seats are new, redone with nos material that was stitched up by an expert upholsterer. They're beautiful, but make the rest of the interior look old, hence the question of paint/dye. lol

My '73 TA has the Custom Saddle interior as seen in Post 5.
Is the Saddle color of the Standard interior as posted by cnc same? Also, I was told the '75 Saddle was same color as the '73. I've seen pix of a '75 Saddle and it sure looked same as '73 but was only going by memory of what mine looked like 40 years ago, not comparing side by side of actual material. Green Hornet, is that not true? I have the original seat covers still on mine. When I owned the car '78-'80 the interior was still in very nice shape. Sometime thereafter and before '91, somebody installed black cloth seat covers (all plastic stuff and dash was sprayed black which is peeing and now a mess, I guess a PO didn't like Saddle) which seems to have done a pretty good job protecting the vinyl which I discovered upon reacquiring the TA in 2016. I have removed the cloth from the rear seat but not the fronts yet. The rear upholstery is not perfect but decent enough for me. The driver seat had a small piece of exposed plastic piping where the vinyl had been worn or torn when I originally acquired it in '78. I expect to find that same exposed piping when I get around to removing the cloth seat covers. Hoping the vinyl is still decent enough under the cloth. The vinyl and plastic was sprayed black during resto of my '64 GTO. Probably helped things like the front kick panels. But the upholstery seems to have a stiffer/shinier/slicker feel to it than what I remember of the Morrokide from my first then 10 yo '64. Of course that was a LONG time ago and my memory could be way off. Still, I'm not convinced it was the right move to spray it with the SEM vinyl "dye". The TA will be strictly a driver so I'm hoping to retain the original seat covers as is. But the dash, door panels, hard plastic, headliner and all the rest will need work so some of the parts will probably need to be sprayed. So I'm watching this thread to see what I can learn. 72projectbird, are you recovering the dash? Who are you using? Anybody else have a recommendation? If I send it (and the console) to Just Dashes, will it come back same vinyl and color as original? Is there a better vendor? |

As others have mentioned, the seat color is mottled and even if you get the correct SEM paint/vinyl dye, it will have a more uniform appearance, rather than the 'mottled' look.

Here is a couple pics of my old PPG color book used for identifier for color usage
the UCV colors were spray as is .No reducers or thinners were required. The chemical make up was not the same as exterior finishes on body. I don't have chip book for 70 or 71 . but through all years colors were shared across GM car line . so you may want to source through other groups for info. I caution you not to use marketing names as a guide to the correct formula for your car also PPG does not manufacture vinyl colors any longer. SEM is probably the best choice now. but they do not formulate all colors . if you find a paint supply house that has a mixing bank of SEM . they may be able to make up a formula for you. the success of this however will rely heavily on mixers talent. also keep in mind that the different parts that make up your interior were not all sourced from same vendor or even in same part of plant or plants operated buy GM |

I meant the mottled vinyl.....not paint...
Perhaps Legendary uses the correct vinyl ........PUI was the only vendor of 73 Firebird seat covers....back when I was looking back when... |

dld, thanks for posting the color Charts.
Do you happen to know what UCV-69 is? Looks like the Flat Colors were supposed to be oversprayed with it. |
