Went out to Dufer Oregon yesterday. Met Marc Neary, aka The Goat Herder. Picked up a bunch of 69 parts. Asked him during lunch what car he thought was more popular and he said 69 by a long shot. One thing I did notice was he had at least 50 68 doors but only 3 69's, well he had 3 only has one real smashed up one anymore.
Moral of the story, 68's are only good for parting out for what can be used on a 69.

I am surprised at how close the vote here is.

My first real reliable car was a 68 April Gold convertible automatic. It was the world to me and that Pontiac solidified an already strong passion for GTO. Sunday mornings would start early driving to Englishtown Raceway Park. Low 14's were typical with a best of 13.93. Excellent for a pure stock car 35 years ago.

its new news that 68s are great parts cars? they have been for 35 years...as a young man i never even considered building a 68, me, and everyone i knew parted them to dirt and never blinked or lost sleep about it..

the joke around my town..68s where for guys that couldnt afford 69s...

i dont believe that now...but as much as people try...you cant re-write history..until near recent times...68s just where not popular in my area..

Ive never ever hear of someone braggin.."he man..i picked up this sweet 69 GTO and am going to part it down to build a 68"

i'm not antagonizing anyone...i am just stating what i know...i dont fee lthat way anymore and have come to appreciate 68s..although i parted 3 in the last 2 years..and they prob helped to restore a dozen cars..

Do you think that has something to do with the Judge's debut in 69? That just had to be cool as all heck seeing a judge roll down the avenue back in those days just a year after the new body style came out. I was in diapers, so nothing I was lucky enough to experience, but when you think of all the ram air packages & the judge muscle I personally think of the 1969's as the "muscle" year even though I own a 68. Really the 68 & 69's are so similar otherwise. I am partial to 68's because I have one, but honestly love them both. If I never had one, I have no idea what year would be my favorite.

My preferences:

I like both the 68 & 69 grills
Lack of the emblem on the front bumper in 69
The GTO emblem on the fender in 69
Back bumper & tail lights on the 68
Interior in the 68 when complimented with headrests
7" wheels that came out in 69 over the 7" 68's
Like both the the vent & non vent windows

Otherwise they both share the great body lines.

Only thing I wish they had was dual remote style mirrors as a factory option. Always seems strange & unbalanced to see just a drivers side mirror, but I grew up in a dual mirror world so I am biased. I wish the body painted sport mirrors would have appeared a few years earlier

Not for me as a teenager. I never cared for the judge, thought it was just a bit of a gimmick as you could get all the same performance in a GTO with out all the unneeded "look at me" flash that had nothing to do with going fast. Still feel this way today, I'd much rather have a RAIV GTO over a RAIV Judge, other then for monetary reasons of course.
Don't know why but the 68's used to be the red headed step child of the GTO world (only cause 71-74 where not even given consideration at all).

Those would look great on a 68.

Yeah...I gave this some thought, since I also own a 69, a 68 LeMans and a couple parts cars. Thought this "entitled " me to be able to vote again, for the 68, of course! But then someone that owns 39 parts cars would be able to vote 38 more times to alter the outcome.

"I tried to vote twice, but it wouldn't let me........ "

Yeah. Only once per user name. And for those who do not know ... it is an open poll. Click on the number to see who voted for what.

As in all things that require a vote, only those that are deceased and/or are from Chicago are voting multiple times.
