Well that explains it then! I was thinking to myself "gosh, what's with all the fire extinguishers!?" - then it was mentioned.

It is a little curious to me why they put them under the front wheel, I always left mine in the car.

Every concours show ive ever been too have the fire extinguisher rule. Its a good one. I lost my shop to a fire last year and did not have one close by. IMO, cant have enough of them around. I keep one in my car now.
Gettysburg sounds great! Only a couple of hours away. |

I remember when talk started about the fire extinguisher requirement. A lot of people were bitching about it. It really is a stupid thing to bitch about. I never understood why so many people will piss & moan about safety items being "required". I race so I am accustomed to having safety items required. Rules are there for your own good. If someone does not want to pay then don't play. Putting your required fire extinguisher under the tire shows your ignorance and just because someone else does it does not mean you should too. IMO, it is disrespectful to anyone running a show. |

I wondered about that part but assumed it would be so that the location is uniform throughout. That is, anyone who is near the car rather than the owner could easily locate it. Maybe? Funny thing, the first time I attended a show with the requirement, I was about to leave that afternoon and a good samaritan ran up and stopped me before I ran over it!

With all the brouhaha over people complaining about the fire extinguisher rule I just figured putting it in front of the tire was their way of protesting the rule. Still looks rediculous though. On a side note... I remember the Fiero owners not complaining about the rule. A little offended, but were not complaining. |

Great opportunity to have fun with this rule and add to having it in view:
Color match extinguisher to car or SD455, 421, RAIV, etc logo extinguishers or Chief Pontiac head extinguisher or GTO / Trans Am / Catalina etc ones or Drive In scene with French Fries and Burger mini mural NOT NOT NOT

A couple of thoughts, having it under the same tire lets the organizers see at a glance if there is an extinguisher present. Without having to look around in the car. Also, IF there is an emergency and one is needed, they are easily accessible rather than having to open a car door or trunk to grab one.

Now that you've mentioned it, that makes sense. The judges have plenty to do without searching around in the car to make sure there's one present.

For this event, the fire extinguishers were checked at tech inspection prior to being allowed into the show.

How did they check them? I know that the contents can settle so how do you know if it's functional without trying it?

Good Point about it being functional. Unless its a professionally maintained unit I would have my doubts. I keep them in my work trucks (dot requirement) but how well they would work is always in the back of my mind. Many years ago my neighbor had his mower catch on fire, he had an extinguisher handy that just puffed one burst when he used. I have no idea what the shelf life of one of these is, even if the gauge says its good.

That red Grand Am has been part of my chapter for ever. It is a 2 owner car with the 2nd owner being Canadian. The guy, who's mother bought that car new, is the one that recently passed and his wife is selling his '63 421/4 speed GP and his '09 GXP Solstice Coupe. That Grand Am has been to a hell of a lot of conventions and won at almost every one it has been at.

All we could check is to make sure the gauge read full and it was not one of the recalled units.

The dark red ‘62 GP belongs to a friend of mine. Frank Montgomery. Out of FL but he is originally out of Kenai, AK. Will try to get him to join here.
