The seat foam in cars is made from soybeans too these days. We've had the same problem at the factory with squirrels and mice eating the wires on finished vehicles that are being held for one reason or another. I've replaced more than one wiring harness for that, and they're always under the hood.

Default Squirrel update

The dealer ship called on my truck, now they have to pull the engine out to get to the firewall insulation that he ate up. Looking at 4 weeks hopefully till I get it back. 4,000.00

New car(2019) in the shop $9200. worth of damage. Customer had the car for 2month. Yes the engine needs to come out also. These cars don't have a engine compartment harness it goes well into the interior. Because of air bag wiring they won't repair just replace. Glad my cat sleeps in my garage!

Does anybody know what year the soy based wire insulation began?

Cats are useful critters, even if they sleep on your car.

See attached.

Maybe time to garage your investment? You're not likely to kill every squirrel.

The soy based wiring has been around for a while... probably 17 to 20 years.

Not to worry. The dealer will have it "done" in a month or so. You'll have to take it back in a couple more times to get it all sorted out and in the process they will scratch and ding the truck multiple times and offer to touch it up (making it worse). It's all a part of the master plan so you just have to roll with it. Expect anything more and you're sure to be disappointed.

I've read somewhere on this site that the steering wheels in our cars were made from soy based material even back in the '60s? I have no idea if it's true.
As for the squirrels, get some peppermint oil and dribble it around under the hood on a rag or something and inside the car also. I've found it excellent for mice...which I've had a problem with for years in the winter months. I would guess squirrels wouldn't like it either.

GM is not using the soy based insulation for their wire. It does not meet our temperature specs. The Japanese have been using it for some time. There are multiple class action lawsuits about it. Rodents will chew any wire insulation and other underhood insulation. That has been a problem for decades. Maybe park your GMC near a Japanese car and the squirrel will prefer a soy based diet.

Good read. I have several Feral cats that hang around my house and garage. I feed them just enough to keep them interested.

Well it’s been seven weeks the machinist hasn’t had a chance to work on my 400 and the dealer ship is still waiting on parts for my Canyon.
At this point it is a joke.

Update. It has been 3 MONTHS and may be I get my truck back on Wednesday. I asked them about trading it in. I paid 33 for it a year ago it has 2000 miles on it. They were gonna do me a favor and give me 25 trade in on it. Wow. That’s 25 percent depreciation. And of that year they had it 3 months.

The Soy Bean wiring is one of the reasons why I would never buy
one of the over priced over engineered vehicles they build now. Vehicle quality peaked about 1999 and has done nothing but go down the crapper since then. Where I live rodents get under the hoods all the time but don't chew anything if it is an older car, just leave crap everywhere.
