2004r with Tripower
Hello, I am paring a 65 GTO Tripower with a 2004r and I am having issues. It shifts great at part throttle 1st to 2nd to 3rd to 4th to overdrive no problem. At WOT it will stay in first till I let off the gas . What Am I missing ? I am hoping that someone has done this swap and can tell me where I went wrong ! thanks Bill

The geometry for that TV cable is WAY different than my setup (with the Q-Jet). My guess is that the TV signal is telling it to hold 1st.
Have you tried manually shifting it at WOT? Most 200 4Rs (like in the Monte Carlo SS) came with a valve body with an automatic 1-2 shift at bout 5000 RPM no matter what the TV setting or shifter position. If it's in 1-2-3 or D, it will shift at 5000RMP. Have you hit that yet?

I had the same issue in my 86 2+2. The shift point was like yours. I had changed the carb and wasn't able to get that cable to the tranny to work right, My tranny guy put a constant pressure valve body in. A TCI part available through Summit. The tranny shifts good but not what I consider optimum. The tranny now has over 15,000 miles on it. So the valve body has allowed the tranny to live.

My )Chevelle) brother used Bow Tie Overdrves to get his 200R4 fuctioning. Here are some links to check out. Getting the TV cable properly set up seems to be both the problem and solution to these trans.

Second that with B*w Tie Overdrives. Awful name ;-) but a great company.
They have everything you need to get it shifting right and at the right RPM under full throttle. |

Actually I'd say that you can rule out the cable being your problem. The shift cable in the 200R4 has to be fully extended against its stop at full throttle. Anything short of this and partial line pressure can allow the trans to slip. So you can't have too tight of cable at full throttle, and if the cable was adjusted too short it would simply keep the carb from fully opening - but not extend shift points. Basically 100% is 100%.
I'd be looking into something being wrong with the valve body or governor. I hate the location of the 200-4R governor compared to the T400 that's accessible by removing a side cover. The 200-4R is only accessible by dropping the pan, and that makes it a pain to fine tune or even inspect.

The Final conflict
This is how my tranny man fixed it.
Removed and cleaned valve body. Checked for sticking valves, replaced vb gaskets, replaced governor and found bad gasket under governor cover. Changed line pressure valve and spring. Added 30 to 40 psi , min tv = 90 psi, max tv = 175. Added longer pin to apply 2nd band, Also installed Bowtie Overdrive tv cable kit. Very adjustable, can adjust full throttle shifts and can adjust part throttle separately Kit is a nice piece, but did not fix it. The rest of what he did fixed it Hope this helps someone else. Thanks for all the tips. konwal455gto Last edited by konwal455gto; 04-27-2020 at 08:54 PM. |
