While poking around my engine block I found the word "Bowtie" on the block. What does that signify? If my memory serves me correct it use to refer to Chevy's. My question is did GM put "Bowtie" on all engine blocks or exclusively on Chevy blocks only. I have had the car about a year and know little about it's past history other than what I got from PHS. Thanks Guys. Like always, any input is much appreciated.

This may sound like a stupid question but are you sure its not a chevy engine.

That's a great question. I have no idea if it's a Chevy engine. In Pete McCarthy's "Pontiac Muscle Car Performance" book he states "The longer I putter around and visit the stashes of other Pontiac buffs, the more amazed I become at some of the strange things the factory has done." The word "Bowtie" is on the engine block on the front passenger side. What would be a sure way to tell if it is a Pontiac or Chevy engine? Any input would be much appreciated. Dusty.

Dusty:

Can you post a picture of it? I am sure someone can ID it then.

What about a casting #? How does the Distributor bolt up? These should be dead give aways.

If you can see a sheetmetal cover (valley pan) under the intake manifold, you have a Pontiac. If the intake is bolted flat against the block in front, it is probably a Chevy.

I wanna be a Chief someday..
