Default 1973 Formula 455

I just looked at this 2 owner car. The gentleman bought it in 1977. Off the road since 1987. Last running in 2004. Fully numbers matching. 90k miles. Lightly optioned, but some decent ones. It has little rot. Admiralty Blue with a Neutral Deluxe interior. This is very dirty and will need a lot of freshening just to get it operational. I shot him a $8500 offer, and he was not happy. We'll see.

that's a code 551 interior!!

In my humble opinion, that is bar none, the absolute best interior option for 1973;
Beige cloth with corduroy inserts, and complimenting brown dash & carpet.

My former '73 Formula (a 350/th350 car) had that interior...

I love the column shift and no console!

Congrats! Always like the unique optioned (and not optioned) Formula cars. Partial to the unique column shift ones. Had a F400 like that. When I see tach, gauges, Formula wheel, and column shift, I wonder if it was an "accident" order. Thinking no order on the console still got floor shift.

Do you remember if the carpet is loop or cut?

Never mind, I can see it's loop. Now if I can get Legendary admit they are wrong.

I didn't realize the non-RA cars had the same air intake setup as the TA.

Very cool car, and I love the color combo. As for the auto on the column, I would not think twice about cutting a hole in the floor and stuffing a five speed in it.

I think your offer of $8500 is generous. This car is gonna need everything, and you're probably gonna be upside down in it when you're done. I really like the car though, and I hope it gets saved.

he won't be upside down if he keeps it and enjoys it...
I'd leave the column shift just because it's so unusual!

Hope you get to look underneath this car. Your offer is reasonable taking the "underside gamble"

The correct sales codes are different than the codes printed in much of the material. SO what you see on a cowl tag wouldn't be what you see in the material for 1973. In 74 they just put a shortened version of the interior on the cowl, like SAD for Saddle interior. I have a 242, and a 247 car.

That is a very cool car.
Agree with others - your offer seems quite fair to the seller.

Can someone explain what the correct air cleaner details were for non-RA Formula Firebirds? Was ‘73 the first year for this style air intake?

yes.

for what ever reason (as I have understood it) the Formula "hood inlet" option wasn't subject to the epa noise laws - so only those aircleaners were carried forward (albeit only through to '74);
the rest got the single large snorkle which fed tothe fender mounted air intake...

The headliner was ruined by mice. His several cats have crawled all over it since it was placed in that garage in the mid 1990's. Trunk floor was absolutley perfect, and I could not find any underside rot, just surface corrosion. I thought I was very fair to the seller. Another gentleman offered him the same money a week ago and he turned it down. I truly think he is valuing the car by his sentimental value he holds to it. I have known the guy a long time, and if anyone has a shot of getting it, it will be me. He wants to sell that place and move to a retirement home in Florida.
