That would depend on the build date of the car. The change from steel to aluminum took place around April '64. See attachment from a Regional Service Manager's information binder.

The 2-3/16" pitch fan was specified for the GTO with HD fan or AC. |

I believe there were two fans used on the 64 GTO's and I see you show a black painted curved tip fan which is shown on a 64 GTO 4 BBL. test car article in pic below. Is the bigger aluminum straight blade fan seen on other 64 test cars and on a recently posted 8000 mile survivor used with the 3.90 equipped cars ?? There was a thread covering fans this past fall, which I generally agreed with. My 'gut' feeling is that the majority of all fans found on the '64 GTO were the 18 in. steel, black painted fans. The heavy duty cooling systems were limited to Taxi fleets - never seen one, police car fleets - never seen one, the trailer package -never seen one, those cars provided with AC, which I have seen a few, and when specially ordered as a factory option (needing documentation). These HD systems used the 19.5 in. fan, and 19.5 in. steel shroud (plastic if you have a taxi, police car, trailer package, or dealer installed). I have several aluminum fans stored away that look similar to the one that Bill shows, but these were off later '60's big cars. Again, I don't have a definitive answer to your question. Perhaps some of our original owners could comment, but my first GTO was already 5 years old, had the engine heavily modified, and I can't remember any problems with overheating - other problems yes - but overheating no. I wouldn't expect overheating to be an issue in a brand new car, our 389's were not a lot different than the 389's that predated 1964, or accompanied our GTO's in the bigger cars. |

Bill:
I had this pipe handy, and tried to take pictures at differing angles. The rubber hoses on each end are 1.25 in. long. Hope this helps. |

GREAT DAY except for my cad parts!!! Finally put the hoses on and filled the radiator. Warmed it up for 20 minutes or so and checked for leaks; so far none.
And then, for the first time in 20+ years, I heard the TP kick in, with the vac. linkage, of course. Found the necessary parts to repair it this winter. Next is detail, detail, and more detail. A labor of love!!!!!!!!!!!! bill |

FLOOR PAN QUESTION
BACK IN THE DAY, when I did my '64, I painted the floor pan drains black, like most of the pan. Now, I see, the plugs were put in after and should be natural along with the screws. OK Anyone know what sealer is being used. It's not the liquid brush on type. From the pics I've seen, it has a lot thicker consistancy, more like ribbon caulking. Any ideas?????????? thanks bill

I think the star should be black. Did you have Butler do any performance mods? The car looks incredible.

THANKS Chad,, Really nothing special. They did their normal complete teardown, clean and magnaflux (found 1 cracked main cap), balanced ,blueprinted and degreed the whirling mass; all new normal stuff and ran for 1 hour. All I really wanted was the leaks and weeps stopped, but they won't touch an engine unless they do a complete job.. Much the same as carbking. Glad I had them do it. I always felt the engine was a little off!!! They put in 34 degrees of total advance. Sounds like a lot to me, but it starts and runs great. Now I am HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!
I thought the star should be black, but just wanted to check first. AS ALWAYS, thanks! bill See you in St. Charles!!!!!!!!!!!! |
