Are probe pistons any good
A frame off 70 gto I bought has a rebuilt 455 with casting 64 heads.
I took a borescope to the cylinders and the pistons are probe pistons part 14722-030. Are they any good. Never heard of them. Also would 93 octane work with the heads. Thanks |

Probe pistons are good, but like most anything internal motor related it must be checked top to bottom.
Can’t put a answer to your question about compression Vs octane with out knowing the deck height of the pistons and the cam you will run.

I used Probe pistons in my old Falcon wagon. On 93 octane it ran 7.0's in the 1/8, low-11s in the 1/4, race weight over 4,000. SBF shifting at 7,000. That motor is now in a Fox bodied T-bird, running high-9's, and those pistons are still in the motor.
Seem like very good pistons to me :-)

Probe pistons were very popular in the 5.0L Ford world 10-15 years ago. Seems almost every 347 SBF had probe pistons in it. I think in general, they were good quality, following established design features of JE, Ross, and Diamond and others. Nothing fantastic or super innovative about them that I am aware of. Their big claim to fame was they were a good piston at a very reasonable price. Lots of different shelf pistons for Ford engines which made them popular during the surge in 5.0L racing back in the day. Haven't seen any in my classes in probably 5 years now which makes me think they may have been bought out by one of the piston giants or just out of business. Not sure about that. Would have to research.

About 14 years ago, I made friends with the manager (might have been the owner) on a Ford forum. I was getting REALLY nice prices on their stuff, even bought a Dart block for way cheaper than anyplace else.
