I had alot of time in mine. I did a body over frame resto years back on my 68 convert.
Plastic prep, cleaning and light sanding was done before hand, not in that order. I shot black slats first, taped and shot silver around inner edges. I then hand painted with a high dollar artist brush (very thin and short hairs) the leading edge of the slats or veins in silver using a very slow stroke. It was a royal pain, took a lot of patience but it looked really nice. I spent way more then I should have on this car even with low miles, but it was fun and first car. Pictures may not show details but slats leading edge were Silver, black inside slats and silver around inner circumfrance of grills. The resto book has these paint codes I think. PM me if you need any help. |

I was able to restore mine very easy. I cleaned them with a scrub pad and water ,
then went to the local hardware store and i no this mite be to easy for some of you guys but kraylon makes a spray paint that is designed to stick to plastic its called FUSION they have it in black and silver and the silver is a very close match, any way i painted them about 3 years ago now and the still look great.

Dave,
Was the scrub pad steel wool or something milder? Did you lay down the black first and then tape it off? If so, how long did you wait so as to avoid the paint peeling? Forgive the silly ? as I am not a paint expert. Thank you, Anthony |

Easiest way I found to remove all paint on plastic w/o any damage was using Easy-Off Oven Cleaner (Regular formula in a aerosol can)..Spray thoroughly, let soak inside plastic bag 24 hrs, hose off...Repeat if necessary..No scrubbing (or very little))..Especially simplified the '69 Hideaway covers as those tiny squares would have a been a pain to scrub individually. Here are what my '69 Hideaway covers looked like as a result of cleaning...As well as 2 pics of painted Grilles/Hideaway covers

Robz thank you, great pictures and info. Yours came out great, and I have my 68 hide-a-ways to do up.

i used a nylon like pad just like you would use for cleaning dishes i also used some 400 grit wet/dry sand paper very lightly on some spots.

Heres a pic of mine i do have to say that i choose to paint the grills all black .And the silver is just around the outside.I think they look fine and on a black car they look even better IMO . Well crap it wont upload it ,to big of a file.

On my 68 we painted the silver first, on the fins as well. the outside was taped and the black was sprayed from the back, keeping the front edges silver. We were in a hurry and figured we could always go back and do them better, no need as they came out perfect.
