Okay. I think I'm finally making sense out of this. It seems like I've found a lot of varience in the length of that center tube ranging from in on average at 11.5 give or take 1/4 inch.

I think the most critical element is the last section of the cable that comes out of the end grommet by the gas pedal. I think this needs to be a fixed length and when it is that center tube section can be longer or shorter as I've seen in the 2 NOS examples and on a few of the vehicles that have been measured.

If any one else can confirm this measurement, I should be on my way.

Any other measurements are always welcome! And anyone with one to sell is even more welcome. But I think with this info we'll all be able to make our own out of a few more common junkyard finds if this pans out.

Thanks, John! I'll have to check to see if my Service Manual has that supplement. Great find! There is an ebay seller that was selling a supposed NOS FIrebird one marked PD that sounds like it really wasn't for F-Bodies.

In any case, we can put a merciful end to this thread. I'm back to address a few threads.

The '72-73 cables are marked PA (2 bbl) and PB (4 bbl).
The '74 cables are marked SE (2 bbl) and SF (4 bbl).

SE measures (mine have smooth ends)
A-B 6-1/2"
C-D 4"
D-E 11-1/2"
G-H 2-1/4"
A-F 21"

SF measures (mine have ribbed ends)
A-B 6-1/2"
C-D 4"
D-E 12-1/2"
G-H 2-1/4"
A-F 22"

I have a cable marked as a '72 2 bbl. and it has the same dimensions as the SF cable and is a close match to the PP repro (I had to rework the G placement and shave the accelerator arm a little).

I do want to point out to any one who has been able to follow this thread...the repo. that is sold by P.Y.,Ames,P.D.,etc. is correct for at least 72&73...possibly 70-74?...I really don't know,since I don't own those cars...the cable is $59 and works 100%...and it is as close as possible......100% correct=No close enough=Yes...if you want more reproductions made, we have to buy them...in 200 years what do you think they will use to restore your car?

Transam1972 is right. While the repro is not dead-on in appearance, it is a functional equivalent to the 72/73 (and maybe other years too). The total length is the same (22.5in) and the black tube center is also the same length (11.75in) with key difference being some of the visuals. In any case, here's a pic of my mangled, brittle, and many times repaired original on top, the repro, and then the one transam1972 sent over for comparison.

You must be measuring from the end, where I measure from the mounting points.

Yup. My measurements are end-to-end. and the actual black tube between the gromments. I'm not sure how they'll compare to your '74s, but I'd think at least the black tube section would be about the same. It seems like a few members had a bit of a variance between the centers, but 11.75 was pretty common.

does the repro. work only for 1972 and 1973...or can we include...1970,71 &1974?

That's a good question since they're marketed for those surrounding years too. I suppose if we got some measurements from those years we could see how they compare. I think the Total Length and the black tube without the grommets will tell the story. It may be that the cable protruding from the end of the grommet going to the gas pedal is a different length so some extra measurements would be good to be extra safe.

that's easy for you to say since you already have a cable...it is the 1970...1971 ...and 1974 cars that I am concerned with...it is about a hobby...right?

I'd say the 70 is different for sure.
It mounts differently in relation to the newer intakes.
(71 may be the same mount also, been too long since I looked)

Plus the ends are different also, I believe.

At this point if there's anyone out there that has a cable loose to take some measurement of we can come to a conclusion on the other years as well, but without them I can just say the 72/73 cables are a fit with the repro. I know some of the surrounding years John mentions have a different connectors so I'm not sure if they would even interchange. But if we find the total length of the cables, the length of the black tube area, and for the 71 and 74 the length of cable protruding from the grommet to the gas pedal we can see if those crossover too.

1970 uses a pin style attachment on the throttle arm of the carb, rather than the ball stud that is used on the '71 - '74 models

I just verified HfR's D-E measurement and it's the same as our 72/73 Cables. And that extra half inch is accounted for too since I'm doing end-to-end and he's doing mounting point to mounting point. Again, except for cosmetics, the repro should work for 74s as well.

If someone has a 71 4bbl cable handy to measure we'll have all our bases covered.

That would be great, Bruce. I think at this point just the total length and the length of the black tube will tell us what we need, but the types of grommets would be nice to know too for aesthetics.
