Why you can't polish your Crank at home.
Well atleast if you want normal Bearing life!

So what is the nutcracker belt grit for polishing?

Goodson supply list 4 or 5 different grits of polishing belts you could use if you made up a nut cracker type dodad.
I guess you could call them for a recommendation on grit(s) to use for whatever Crank your dealing with .

You CAN polish your crank at home IF you have the correct equipment and supplies. You just have to remember that you always polish a cast crank in the same direction as it rotates. On forged cranks, the direction of rotation doesn’t matter.

Sorry, I guess I should have changed the title of this post and made it longer, as in You can polish your Crank at home if you know the proper procedure and have the proper equipment.

OK, the crank on my 455 was ground in 1989. Been running for almost that long. I mean way over 1000 passes and plenty of street use in the real early 90s. It has had 2 sets of main bearings and 3 sets of rod bearings. All I ever did was hit it with 400 then 600 with penetrating oil. Stood it up on end and tried to keep the work as even as I could. Original oil pump with only one hole drilled in idler gear.
This has been the most reliable engine at our drag strip, no one else is even close. All of the same guys have gone through several engines in that amount of time, all brands including Pontiac. Its last passes were its best ever. It has 54lbs oil pressure hot at a fast idle. 60lbs going down the track. Can go out in my garage and start it right up today. Its best to have a machine shop polish your crank, sure. But do not tell me you can not get away with polishing your crank at home because I proved you could get away with it in a high 10 second engine. And I am not just "lucky". |

I too hand polish mine like 8-10 steps from 600 up to 5000 grit wet paper then flitz with about a 3.5 foot long cotton cloth in shoe shine fashion
It comes out like chrome better than anything I have paid for prior No failures in fact my short blocks last to long .

I tried to polish the 455 crank. Ended up having the shop polish 2 cranks. They did so, and they look unpolished.

HIS. That's why I asked what grit the only way to go shops use because my personal results are better
But I will admit it's not for those who are impatient for those who are trying to make a living at it because it's not an hour or two adventure .
