I've owned at least six 71 T/As that had the original motors, four of which I parted out over the years. I have never seen a 7041270 or 7041273 carb on a 1971 Trans Am motor.

I am not sure where the carb gets installed, at the engine factory or at the assembly plant. For example, a 71 455HO 4-spd motor coded WC can be installed in a Formula (which would get a 7041273 if it has ram air), or in a T/A (which would get a 7041267). My guess is the carb is installed at the assembly plant, otherwise Pontiac would need two different part numbers and engine codes for ram air vs non-ram air.

Factories usually don't like to have the same p/n for two different assemblies. Also, a 70 T/A 4-spd built for use in California would have a 7040573, but the engine code would still be a WS.

I've wondered about this for some time, if anybody has an answer please let me know.

I believe that in the not too distant past there was confusion about this because the TA had 'ram air', while the 267/268 carbs were spec for "non-ram air" cars, which may really only be a term applicable for 1971 Firebird Formulas and GTO's - iirc the non-RA carbs were used on the GT-37(?) of that year.
(I should point out that my cousin's all original '71 TA has a '270)
1971 was a funny year for carbs (which is why my prior comment was only about 1970).
For model year 1972, the TA's went back to using to 'ram air' number carbs - but it's also worth noting that Formulas with the 455HO all had RA... not sure on GTO's or GT-37's.

cool!

RAIII + M21!!

I thought hat was the CL car!!

Volo is a pretty cool place for out-of-towners (like myself) to visit if the opportunity should arise, I had never heard of it, but when I stopped in the area on route to the TA Nat's in '06, the locals I stayed with brought me there - pretty cool!
I went back my next time through, and spent even more time perusing through the antique side of the business... and might have wasted some money there

Do you mind me asking what volo pegged his car at?
(note that I am not asking what you paid)
