Default The Phil Monteith 4th Gen Hatari !

Well, I was gonna post some DRC lists of races where this car did good. But, it is such a well known car, & so much has been written about it that I decided not to post a bunch of lists.

I think Peter Biondo won 4, of his 5 national SS championships driving mostly this car. During that process, he obviously won LOTS of div races & national events. Because of all those wins, I assume this car has probably won more races than any other Pontiac powered SS car, ever.

There have also been several other drivers, including Sam & Sal Biondo, John Agneta, probably several others I'm not aware of. Phil Monteith probably made a few passes in it, himself.

The car was just in the Class Racer Nationals race. Sal Biondo was driving, & made it to the semi-final round. So, it's still a very competitive SS car.

I think it ran a 400 for years, then switched over to the alum head 428. Phil Monteith has had a lot of success with his Hatari Birds. I think he also either supplies, or has a hand in, the engines in the Agneta & Pickett 4th gen, & the Biondo Stocker. May not be the quickest engines, but they have proven to provide reliable, competitive power, for many years now. So, hat's off to Phil Monteith, for his contribution to Pontiac powered class racing !

I've seen it listed as a '98 & a 2000, for sure. Assume that would depend on which front cap the car had, at the time. Also assume there has only been one 4th Gen Hatari. But, obviously I don't know that, for sure.

Default Small Body GT Cars

The body rules for GT are quite liberal. The small body cars, such as the Sunfire & Cobalt can be used. Front wheel drive cars can be converted to rear wheel drive.

From the GT section of the 2020 NHRA rule book:

"...Reserved for foreign and domestic factory-production two-door coupes, two-door sedans, sports cars, convertibles, or station wagons with any production V-8 engine of the same make. Year of engine optional.

Engine

V-8 only; must be same make as body. Year optional...Corporate engines permitted. Truck engines prohibited..."

I consider the word "make" to mean either Chevy, or Pontiac, or Buick, or Olds, or etc.

But, apparently, NHRA interprets it to mean either General Motors, or Ford Motor Corp, or Chrysler Corp, or etc. So, using THAT interpretation, it means that any GM V8 listed in the NHRA classification guide, could be used in any GT legal GM body.

That's why a 428 Pontiac engine is legal in a Chevy Cobalt. I suppose it would also be legal in a Camaro, Corvette, Nova, or Chevy wagon, as well as many Olds, Buick, & Caddy models. The 428 Pontiac is not a "corporate" engine, but it IS from the GM "make".

Don't know why they don't just make the rule clear by saying any NHRA legal Super Stock GM V8 in any GT legal GM body. But, whatever. Pontiac V8 engines are legal in most GT legal GM bodies.

If the engine claimed was available ONLY with a manual trans, then that engine can NOT be claimed in a GT car, if using an auto trans. Same goes for engines that came ONLY with an auto trans. Can't be claimed in a manual trans GT car.

The '77 350 & '79 400 Pontiac engines are examples that come to mind. We all know that the '79 400 came ONLY with a manual trans. The '77 350 came ONLY with an auto, according to NHRA. Sal Piacentini & Mike Morgan have done really well with that engine, in SS.

http://www.classracerinfo.com/Engine...3&MAKE=Pontiac

So, anyhow, we'll look closer at 4 of the "small body" Pontiac powered GT cars.

Default Don Kennedy GT Sunfire

Since Don Kennedy pretty much wrote the GT rules, I'll begin with his car 1st. I think it's usually listed as a 2005 Sunfire.

I think it has always run the alum head 428. I don't think it has run in the 8's(not positive), but it has run in the very low 9's, many times. Has qualified near the top of lots of Q-sheets, & has won class at the US Nats.

I'll post a few lists. Don has also posted links to quite a few videos of the car in action. Will try to look up some of those & post links. But, they are probably easy to find on YouTube.

I'll begin with his GT/EA class win at Indy, 2019. He ran a 9.177 @ 144.18 mph, for the win.

Default McCarty GT Grand Am

I'm sure there have probably been a few Pontiac powered GT cars that I haven't heard about. IIRC, a guy on the Class Racer forum posted about an AFB equipped 389 powered GT car. I think it was an Astre. Not positive. I'd never heard of the car or owner. Couldn't find any info on it.

So, if any of you guys know of other Pontiac powered GT cars that I don't mention in this thread, by all means, post your info.

As I've mentioned, there are several guys who have posted here who have raced, & do race these GT cars. They obviously know MUCH more about GT cars than I ever will. Some are willing to add small bits of info, occasionally. So, once again, I invite them to feel free to correct anything I get wrong, and to post anything they think will add good info to the thread. Good GT car pics I don't have are also appreciated.

This car has been driven by Stacy McCarty. I assume most of the engine work was done by his dad, Pontiac racer Lynn McCarty. The car is listed, sometimes, as an '05 Grand Am. I think it runs the alum head 428. It also ran GT/AA, before NHRA changed the weight breaks.

The 1st year i can find this car on the DRC lists is 2006. It was listed as a 2003 Grand Am, running GT/CA.

7/15/06 - div 3-3 - #40 - 9.853 - .847 under.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2006#indextop

At this race, the car is listed as a 2005 GA, running GT/AA.

9/20/08 - Jegs Northern Sports Nats - #55 - 9.404 - .996 under.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2008#indextop

10/5/08 - Pro-Am Race @ Osceola - SS Win !

http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...88&postcount=1

9/5/09 - US Nats - #108 - 9.344 - 1.056 under.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2009#indextop

9/4/10 - US Nats - #53 - 9.25 - .850 under.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2010#indextop

9/3/11 - US Nats - #24 - 9.149 - .951 under.

4/28/12 - div 3-1 - #12 - 9.145 - .955 under.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2012#indextop

The car had an engine explosion & wreck @ the 2012 US Nats.

http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...20&postcount=3

10/5/19 - div 3-6 - #34 - .696 under.

8/6/20 - div 3-2 - #42 - .663 under.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2020#indextop

Apparently the car has been painted gray. Or, that might be gray primer. Don't know.

Default The Quickest Pontiac Powered GT Car

This car is a Cobalt, powered by an alum head 428. It has run 8.90 & won it's GT/AA class at Indy, 2 years in a row. It's raced by Robert Cruzen Sr.

Car seems to run 9-teens easily, with some left in reserve. Don't really know how quick it could go, if there was not the fear of an NHRA hp "hit". Not sure exactly when he put the Pontiac engine into the little Cobalt.

The earliest I've found it is at the div 7 race in 2011. It was already quick, turning a 9.32. But, he would wring more out of it, in the months that followed.

3/26/11 - div 7-2 - #2 - .949 under.

Ran a 9.035 @ Indy, which was 1.065 under & good enuff for #5 position, & won the GT/AA class. That was a pretty awesome performance for a Pontiac powered SS car !

Well, hey, this is the quickest Pontiac powered GT SS car ever. It qualified in the top 5 or top 10 lots of times that I didn't post. Wish it had a Pontiac body. But at least it does have Pontiac power !

Default Irvin Johns 428 Cobalt

Another little 428 powered Cobalt has been driven mostly by Todd Frantz. I think Todd is part of a racing partnership between him & Irvin Johns. I know they run 2 cars, maybe more. Irvin drove the Pontiac powered car some this year.

Here's what a fellow Pontiac powered GT racer posted. "...Todds cobolt has a 428 built by Jeff Taylor
car owned by Irvin Johns."

With this car, Todd won the GT/FA Class at Indy last year, with a 9.188/143.80 run.

Yeah, he has set numerous nat records, with his non-Pontiac powered cars.

Wish he'd spent all that time & money trying to milk all he could out of Pontiac engines.

But, there have been LOTS of Pontiac racers jump ship, because they wanted to go fast.

Then many of 'em badmouth the Pontiac V8 design.

My thought is: If you wanna run a 10,000 hp nitro engine, run it. But don't badmouth other brands. Opinions differ.

PS: Have read of several Pontiac racers who switched to other brands because they got some kind of a sponsorship deal. Some good drivers are offered a free ride, because of their driving skills. Nowadays, a competitive SS car ain't cheap. So, a free ride is the only way some drivers can do it. Most drivers, especially the younger ones, would rather drive any brand than not drive at all. I'm old enuff & enuff of a Pontiac freek, so that if i couldn't drive a car with Pontiac power, I just wouldn't race at all. But, that's just me. I understand why most others don't share my stance.

The Cleggs style have lots of real Pontiac powered stuff. John's 64 Tempest Texas mile car, JB has a RAV head 4cylinder turboed bucket roadster too.

Yeah, it's true that The Cleggs have had lots of Pontiac powered drag cars.

We've mentioned that he bought his '73 SD455 Bird new, won D/S @ Indy that year, then raced it in SS, for many years. But, then he switched it to non-Pontiac power. At least they have now restored it & J.B. is running it in SS/H, at the Texas double this weekend. Has run mid-9's.

Also have the old H-O Racing Specialties '74 Bird, which was a SS record holder. J.B. ran it for several years, with both an auto & a stick. As most here know, he also got the stick version of that car down into the mid-9's.

I assume the '74 T/A Stocker has been John's for quite a while. There have been pics of it on his Mission Garage website, for quite a while. I've read that Forest Pierdolla built it. For several years, Hunter Pierdolla drove it. Now has a different driver, & has "Mission Garage" on the doors. The website also has pics & video of a girl driving what appears to be the same car. Don't know all the history & details of that car. And don't know how many Pontiac powered drag cars John has either owned or sponsored.

Anyhow, the Clegg's have raced several different cars, with Pontiac bodies. Some were Pontiac powered. Some weren't.

While on the subject of Texas Pontiacs, Mark Yacavone mentioned that a texas guy named David Sidlo use to race a 389 powered GP in SS. I found his son on FB & sent him a PM. He said that his Dad had indeed raced an old GP. Said he was entered in the current Texas double race. So, I looked him up. Sure enuff, he's on the SS Q-list, but he's driving a Camaro.

Did a DRC search for his name. A couple of years back, he was driving a '97 Bird. Saw that Bird today, driven by Hunter Pierdolla. It was listed to have a 396 Chevy engine. It had "SIDLO" on the doors. So, I suppose David either has 2 SS cars, or he's driving the Camaro for someone else & Hunter is driving his Bird.

Anyhow, his son gave me his phone number. So, sometime next week I'll call him & get more info & maybe some pics of his old 389 GP, from the past.

Default Quickest Pontiac Powered Regular SS Cars

At the Texas double, this past weekend. J.B. Clegg ran a 9.623, in the Clegg '73 SD455 Bird. As far as I know, this is the quickest reg SS Pontiac powered car ever, unless their '74 SD455 Bird went quicker. Don't know what the best ever ET is, for either car.

But, both of those were stick cars, when they ran their quickest times. As far as I know, the John Angeles '69 RAIV Bird is the quickest ever reg SS Pontiac powered car, which had an auto trans. John's daughter, Keri, has done most of the driving, for many years now, & is said to have made the 1st ever 9 sec pass, in a reg SS Pontiac powered car, back in 2000.

Don't know what the car's quickest ever time is, in reg SS legal form. But I know it went 9.765, back in 2006. Don't think another reg SS Pontiac powered auto trans car has gone anywhere near that quick.

As always, if anybody knows this info to be incorrect, please post the correct info.

Another Great pic of the Hatari Firebird - Won The 4 of its Super Stock Championships with the 6X 400 .

Ran across a LOT more lists where Greg was .800 or more under his index. Too many to list. I think the car could easily run more than a sec under at lots of tracks. But, when you run a sec or more under, you sometimes catch the eye of NHRA officials. So, most Q-lists in recent years do not show many cars a sec or more under, at races where the NHRA officials check it. There are some races where the hp police are not on duty. I think the US Nats is one of those races, as well as maybe some of the national open races. There are also special allowances made for what are called "mineshaft" conditions. That occurs occasionally when the temp is cool & the pressure & humidity is at a certain level. I think the upper half of the field must run a sec or more under, for "mineshaft" conditions to be declared. At least that's my understanding of what I've read about it. May not be EXACTLY accurate. Hope somebody will clarify that rule.
Mine shaft condition is when 50% of the field is .850 under the index or faster This week at St Louis was Mine shaft conditions.I think also if you go 1.20 at a race with mine shaft condition you will still get horse power !!!

The US nats for the last few years is a race you could go as fast as you want and no horse power was given out . But not anymore .

Thanks a LOT for that info !

Didn't know about the change at Indy.

Last year, the top 10 SS cars were more than 1.20 under. So, I suppose that will change under the new rules.

Default Mineshaft ?

Here's more info I just found on the Class Racer forum. Posted it on the Stocker thread. Thought I'd also post it here.

Under certain conditions, it will be determined that there are "mineshaft" conditions, at a race. When this happens, I assume that the NHRA hp factor police will not use the qualifying times, in order to add hp to the quick cars.

There are several guys here who know all about this. But, here's what is said to be a quote from the rulebook, which describes what constitutes mineshaft conditions.

"To decrease the potential for horsepower/index adjustments when favorable atmospheric (i.e. “mineshaft”) and/or track conditions may have contributed to extraordinary performance the NHRA has developed a system to protect the racers’ horsepower/indexes. If at the conclusion of qualifying the first competitor in the bottom half of the field is -.850 seconds or faster under the class index."

Note: This is just something I found on the Class Racer forum & copied. I can't vouch for how accurate the info is. The complete mineshaft details may include more than is mentioned in this post.

Default Video

This was one of the videos posted in the Stock/SS section, on the Class Racer forum. .

@ the 10:16 point is Keri Angeles driving the John Angeles '69 SS Bird. This car & driver are said to be the 1st regular SS Pontiac 400 powered car to break into the 9's, back in 2000.

Default The 1st

Well, I may have already posted this. But if so, I don't remember it. Did a quick search & didn't find it.

I've probably mentioned that the John Angeles '69 SS BIrd, with daughter Keri driving, was the first reg SS class 400 Pontiac powered car to run in the 9's, back in 2000.

Well, I assume I'd read this, but if I did, I suppose it didn't register.

"...it's important to point out that Roy McKinney was the VERY first NHRA Super Stocker running in a GT class of Super Stock with a 400 cubic inch engine to run in the nines back in 1997. Roy deserves that mention..."

Just read this yesterday. If it's correct, that means that the McKinney GT car got into the 9's about 3 years before the reg SS class Angeles car did it.

I say " If ", because I read about both, on Bruce Fulper's site. Can anybody here verify the info presented about these 2 cars ?

There are other 400 Pontiac powered GT cars that have run 9's. But, if this info is correct, The McKinney car was the 1st to do it.

The McKinney family has had lots of success racing Pontiacs, beginning with that Stock win at the '77 US Nats. I'd say they earned hero status, in the Pontiac drag racing world !

Anyhow, here are the 2 pics I have of the McKinney GT BIrd. The 1st pic was at the 40th US Nats race. I think that was in 1994, 3 years before the car supposedly got into the 9's. I assume the car in the 2nd pic is the same car, but with a different hood. Not positive. In case some here are not familiar with the McKinney cars, I'll add a couple of pics of one of their SS Birds, when it was red.

Default Don Kennedy 3rd Gen GT Contd.

I did some posts about Don Kennedy. For those who are not aware & have not read what I posted, Don proposed most of the original rules for the GT category of the Super Stock class.

He was racing a '73 Bird as an SD455 powered Super Stocker. After NHRA adopted the GT rules, Don switched over to an SD455 powered 3rd gen Bird, to run in GT Super Stock.

After running it for several years, he put it up for sale in around '09. I don't think I posted this - can't remember. Just run across the thread he posted here in the For Sale section.

https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...35&postcount=1

As most know, he switched over to the 428 powered Sunfire, he still races. Some will remember that he got the GT/EA class win, at Indy, in 2019 ! That's also the year that Todd Frantz got the GT/FA class win, also with 428 Pontiac power.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2019#indextop

Anyhow, Don Kennedy is a long time Pontiac Super Stock drag racer.
