Get the stainless tank. Looks good forever. Someone on here says the Grand Prix tank is 24 gallons while the LeMans /GTO tank is only 20 or 21. And it fits the GTO.

I bought the stainless. Used stainless straps and bolts to complete the install.

Sounds like I will be needing the best radiator shop in town to handle my filler neck soldering, I'm not the best with solder. Appreciate the advice

If you were not considering fuel injection then the answer is simple, get a new gas tank from Spectra. The Spectra gas tank is exactly like the original tank. They are inexpensive and look really nice after installation.
I bought this latest tank from Rock Auto and it was only $138.79 plus tax and only $12.99 for shipping. The same tank from other sources, including the manufacturer, was more expensive and also would have involved very high shipping costs (manufacturer wanted to charge me $150 for shipping!!!). I checked and could not find any other source that could come close to the total delivered price of RockAuto.com. There are other brands of gas tanks on the market besides Spectra, but they usually look different or sometimes do not fit correctly. Some vendors, including Ames, are selling steel tanks that are painted silver rather than having the correct coating like the originals so be aware and ask before you buy. |

I bought my gas tank, fuel sending unit, and straps through Ames for my 67 GTO. It all fit and installed with no problems what-so-ever. I bought quality rattle can paint through an online supplier and painted the straps black and tank silver. It looks good for anyone who cares to bend over and look at the tank.

I ended up going with an EFI tank from Tanks Inc. as I want to go to EFI in this car. I attempted to purchase one from an ebay seller which was very disappointing and a complete hassle (still waiting on the return dollars) my new tank pump and sending unit are scheduled to be here today. So I spent a few hours this AM getting the old one out. Not a difficult job but it took quite a bit of persuasion to get it out between the 3in exhaust pipes.

A new question for those who have done this replacement, I have seen that a rubber adhesive mat is available to go between the tank and the trunk floor, did you use one or was it not necessary?

I would definitely put something between the tank and body to quiet it down. I reused my old stock one from the original tank, it was almost like a roof shingle but bigger obviously.

There used to be a member here that sold an exact duplicate of the factory matt at a very reasonable price. . I bought two from him. He hangs out mostly on the Olds forums.
I can't remember his username right now but if you're interested I'm pretty sure I can find it. Sent from my moto g(6) play using Tapatalk

I just replaced the tank in my 70 Skylark. This was the cheapest I found and free shipping.

Rubber strips
I just used two rubber strips that I cut from some 1/8" rubber sheet. I glued them on to the top of the tank. My old tank had a "few" pin holes.

Thanks for the input on if or not to use some type of material to reduce the possible chaffing and help cut down on noise. I figured it would be good but was not sure what everyone did.
