Not sure if this is the correct place but didn't see a fit in any of the other forum sections. I need to replace the gas tank on my 71 LeMans and I'm wondering where is a good place to source a new tank from. I see that Ames has one and so does Year One, anybody buy from one of those two or from somewhere else, and your thoughts and experiences with what you bought.

I got mine years ago from year one and it was fine, as I would bet the Ames tank is also!
Also now is the time to up grade your fuel system if you ever think you might run a motor of over 400 hp,

Rock Auto is where i ended up getting mine. They sell the Spectra tanks, made in Canada. I actually bought one from our sponsor and returned it. The finish that they had on theirs at the time looks nothing like the original. I know it wasn't , but the best way to describe it was it looked like silver spray paint. I needed a galvanized or bare metal, and clear coated the tank. The Spectra had the same contours and stampings as original for my '65.

Yep, you can get them from Tanks Inc., but personally I would get a stainless tank from through Ames.

Totally understand and I have bought parts from Ames before and I'm sure that I will in the future. However it never hurts to check out any available options. Also Ames has this disclaimer for the tank they offer: "NO EMBOSSED RIB ON SIDEWALLS LIKE ORIGS. THIS TANK DOES'NT HAVE THE EMBOSSED VERTICAL RIBS ON THE SIDEWALLS AS THE ORIGINAL HAD" While I'm not putting together a concourse car that did give me pause.

Thanks for the info, I don't plan any HP changes but I have been looking to purchase one of the EFI systems so this is a perfect time to consider the fuel delivery changes for that.

Very much appreciated I see that they offer a tank set up for EFI, as that is something that I'm very interested in doing that could be a perfect match. It also helps that according to their dealer locator there are two vendors in my town.

I went through this recently with a tank for my 65 GTO. Purchased one from Tanks Inc that was supposed to be galvanized. Well it was made in Taiwan and the galvanizing was some kind of silver paint. Sent it back and ordered one from Spectra. Looked great , fit perfect and made in Canada. Lesson learned, you get what you pay for.

Funny thing about those Spectra made in Canada tanks, You guys down south can buy them cheaper than we can in Canada.
Mine cost me around 225, but you can sometime see them on eBay for around 100 US. My local part store wanted close to 400
so I did some looking and got one off eBay that was being sold in Canada. Oh ya tank looks good and fit good, clear coated it
so it would stay that way.

Ive done both the canadian tank (it was fine) and a tanks ink FI style tank.

I will say that if you ever intend any track time with your ride, spend a little up front and get a better tank that has baffles. I would also recommend an in tank pump if you are making any notable power.

The standard Ebay canadian replacement was fine for a Sunday driver, but I had problems at the track with fuel starvation under acceleration.

The one I bought from Autozone was Spectra.. I paid, as I recall, about $175 for the tank and the sending unit combined.

I checked around also for my 72. Ended up getting the best deal through JC Whitney on a Spectra Canadian tank. Looks like the original and fit the same.

Greg, how did you handle the fller neck deal since '68 replacements come with no neck?

(I have heard of guys using the '69 tank with filler neck on '68's and doing some "gentle" bendng of the neck. Not sure how actually feasible this is.)

When I get them without a neck, I remove the original neck and solder it into the new tank. Works like a charm.

Soldering is what I should have done but I did the gentle bending with a block of wood under the neck and a floor jack.. Still, when I remove the fuel cap it fouls the bumper just slightly. I have to tilt the cap to get it out.
