Parted out a 70 Firebird about 10 years ago that came out of the California plant - early production number (in the hundreds) and it had a metal tail panel (where the P O N T I A C letters go). Anybody ever see one of these, or have a value for it? How common are they?

I think I still have one somewhere that came off of an early production car.

I also saw one on a very rough 70 Firebird base model at Charlotte Autofair several years ago.

By any chance, did you notice anything odd about the trunk pan. On my very early car I parted, the trunk pan was different. On the typical 70-73 trunk pans, there were two oval drain plugs near the bumper. There are also some shallow grooves that run to the back of the trunk, and terminate in a cirular coined area near the hump. On the early car I had, each of the circular areas had a small round drain plug installed. The 70 at Charlotte Autofair also had the small drain plugs.

I have no idea what they're worth. The entire 70 Firebird at Charlotte could have been bought for $600. It was a pretty rough, non-running car.

I've never seen any advertised for sale anywhere.

Mike, it was so long ago, I really don't know what the trunk looked like. The car was a bad experience from the start, and got parted out as quickly as the wrenches would go. I think the tail panel and the 4spd cross member are the only parts I kept from it - and the tail panel only because I didn't think it should have existed in the first place.

The trunk floor with the two extra E-coat drain hole plugs was on all '70s through the first few months of production. I assume it was determined to be unnecessary and deleted to save $.

The picture below is of a car on eBay right now with Norwood VIN N117XXX.

The early cars also had additional plugs in the top of the rear wheelhouses and in the passenger compartment floorpan.

The number of running changes on these cars seemed to be very high...

I don't know what constitutes an early production car but I just looked at my car and it has the same truck floor as the one in the picture Keith posted. It was built in early April in Los Angeles. The tail panel is fiberglass.
