Can someone tell me what the linkage is called that connects to the steering column lever in the engine compartment and goes down to the transmission/subframe? I have an automatic. I always that this was the reverse lockout linkage but someone recently told me that there is no such thing on an automatic car. Any help? Thank you!

I believe it is the neutral safety switch linkage.

I believe it was originally referred to as a shifter interlock system. It's what locks the shifter in place when the key is switched off (auto in park and stick in reverse).

GM called it a gearshift control rod.

Looking in the 1970 Pontiac Shop Manual, it's called the 'Back Drive Linkage'

This linkage controls the neutral safety switch and the back up lights. If removed due to header problems you can spin the ring by hand on the column, but be wary it can spin to drive/reverse when driving and shut down the caror allow you to start when in gear.

CLINT S, if the car is running, how can spinning the collar shut down the engine? The most it's going to do, by disconnecting the linkage, is 1) not allow it to start until turned to the correct position, 2) allow it to start, even if the car is in a gear other than park or neutral (on a manual you push in the clutch, moot point), 3) not have the reverse lights come on when backing up, and/or 4) let you drive around with the reverse lights on.
