Hi,
I was doing a little spring cleaning today in my building and came across a space saver spare. When did Pontiac start putting space saver spares in the T/As? The space saver has something like a F70-15 tire on a black steel wheel. Are the tires date coded? Was the space saver rim the same as the standard 15" steel wheel? Thanks, Mike |

Mike, According to the PHS I have for my 70 T/A, the space saver was an option. Under "AMA Specifications-Passenger Car" on page 18 it states, "...optional space saver spare is on 14x5 rim wheel"

My 70 RAIV Van Nuys TA came with one. It is grey, & has code KC, mine still has red bottle & bracket.

Yes, definitely available on a '70. Mine has an original space saver and the wheel was painted a grey/beige color.
Also, the '67 Bird I used to own had a factory space saver (it was on the invoice and window sticker) as well.

I think the later space saver tires used 15" rims. I have a space saver from an '81 T/A I had a while back and its a 15" rim. My friend has a gray space saver from a '74 SD and it was on a 14" rim.

The tire size is what's throwing me. It's the old F70-15. I thought tires had gone to the 235 and 245 style tire by then.
I have three suspects for where the tire came from. I have junked a 72, 74, and 76 T/A over the last couple of years. I think it's out of one of those, but I'm not sure which. There is no inflator bottle with it. Mike |
