First of all hi to all the great gto people .
Now question i have been reading the forum before i could be come a member. I am under the impression that the back glass leaks and is the main reason of rusting problems in trunk and back glass sill . Is there a panel available for replacement of back glass sill ? As mine must leak also. The car i bought has been redone before but the middle of thrunk pan has surface rust now from moisture sitting there.

The problem is not so much the leak, but there is insulation sandwiched between the lower support structure and the upper metal panel that holds moisture once it gets wet, and starts the rust from the inside out.
Good news- the replacement panel is available. Bad news- the lower substructure is not. |

My buddies 67 Chevelle had the lower rear panel rot out.
We went to the local aftermarket GM parts store, and bought a brand new panel. I wont swear to it. But aren't these the same part the G.T.O. uses? I know the vinyl top moldings are the same

I know the panel is available. It's either Performance years or Ames performance that has it. If I had my catalogs handy I'd look it up for you, but alas, they are 2000 miles away. I asked a body shop about installing one on my 67 Tempest and they preferred to fabricate one themselves. They said it would fit better and be more durable. I haven't had it done yet and I can't say what the price was because it was built into a paint and body work quote. Hope this helps.

Is this insulation material sandwiched between the shelf and sheet metal ? The reason i ask is I looked under there from the trunk compartment up .
the metal under there looks real good. The man i bought the car from, thought it was the trunk lid fit itself. This car was redone in 1989 and still looks real good. Both quarters and shelf rear of back glass replaced at redo time .

My 67's trunk rotted because the weatherstrip lost it's shape and no longer sealed the rain out. Check the rubber.

Take a garden hose and start at the tail lights and wet the car down . Move ever so slowly upward to the glass & roof area . Lay in the trunk with a flash light looking for the water leak . Once you see were it's coming in , you'll be able to make your repair . Also unscrew the hose nozzel and let the water run out . If you spray it you can't pinpoint the leak .
More than likely you will have to remove and reseal the rear window . A very common problem , unless you find rust holes under the glass . Man is not complete until he's married , then he is finished !

Good sound advice Jim thanks for the input.
I will surely do that. So i take it the rear end panel are prone to leak as well ? Seems to me read somewhere that , the rear panels are a 2piece design on some models and a 1 piece design on others. Is this true?

The rear end tail panel ( the panel your tail lights mount into ) is a one piece panel . Sometimes the gaskets on the tail lights dry out and leak . Like I said before , it's your rear window giving you problems .
