Anyone know what the jumper location is on the terminal strip for troubleshooting when the "CHECK ENGINE" light comes on? I used to know where it was on a 96 Regal my wife had. Would it be the same? The two next to each other to the far top left of the strip?
Regards, Blues

Its the same as your wifes regal.
That is an obd II system. it will be a 4 digit code. Let me know what the code is I am a tech at a PONTIAC/Buick/GMC dealer. |

Ok, I looked under the dash everywhere except were it was at. (Or maybe I was staring right at it.) Any clue as to where its hiding?

under the steering column. You are probably staring at it. The connector is not rectangle like
the old ones This one has angled sides. Like a triangle with the top cut off. |

Ok, I must have been thinking of an older model a friend had from work then. This connector, when I glanced at it, I noticed it had only about 4 female prongs. Do I jump the two side by side towards the seat or the firewall sides?
looking up: Seat X-X or.. X X X X X-X Firewall The procedure for checking codes is the same right? Accessorys all off, key to "ON" only, 3 blinks, then code, 3 blinks to end? Chas.

You can't do that the same way you can with OBD1 cars.
Either take it to AutoZone and have them run the code for you or find someone in your area with a Autotap. I have one, but I have a feeling that you are no where near me. |

Mr GTO you are right.
you cant jump an obdII connector. Use autoZone for their diag equipment. But dont listen to them about what could be wrong. Let me know what the code is. |

Went to Autozone after work yesterday but the light went out. They said they can not retrieve the code unless the light is on. I thought it was stored in a memory. I have a feeling it came on only because of the water pump issue I had last week anyway. At least now I know where to take it next time.
Thanks for all reply posts!!...(b) Chas.

water pump will not set a code.
It has a memory, and should show up as a history code. Is your gas cap tight? you might laugh, but its the most common reason for a check engine light. |

I checked the gas cap thing. (I read about it in the manual, though I did find it odd. When I bought my Regal, they said to always turn the cap till it clicked a few times.) As for the water pump thing, I thought that becasue the temp got hot from it, that it may have played a part. I will go back to Autozone tomorrow and ask them to check the history listing.
Thanks again. Chas.

Went to Auto Zone. The guy said the code was 133, I noticed on his meter 0135 though. He said it was an Oxygen sensor on the 1st bank.(Drivers side?) What do you think? If he's right, by what means is it attached to the intake or is it the exhaust manifold? Forgot to ask him all that...

I didnt have a chance to look up the codes, actually I forgot. BUT....Those codes are both 02 sensor codes. One is a heater circuit code, and other one is a performance code. basically the O2 sensor is junk. BUT i dont know which one it is.

Is there anyway I can determine which one is bad? Im tempted to save a few bucks and just get them both from a low milage car thats the same in the local scrap yard.

Honestly I would just replace them both. USE NEW PARTS. If you dont you will regret it.
How much do they cost you? I get parts at cost plus 10%. Use Delco parts. They cost more, but it will save you time and money in the future......... |

I have to agree, just get a new O2 sensor, they typically last a very long time unless your like me and like to mix in a little leaded racing fuel occasionally. You mentioned they thuoght it was sensor one, I just ran both codes you gave and they do both pertain to sensor 1, that sensor should be located on the rear exhaust manifold between the head and the firewall, I believe its smack dab in the middle of the manifold if its a 3800. You may also consider purchasing an O2 sensor socket as this will most likely make your life easier!

Can anyone tell me how to get the "check engine" light to go off now? Im hoping its as simple as disconnecting the battery for a few moments to clear the history and not something else wrong that I may have missed.

One of two ways
It will clear itself after a number of "drive cycles" or a scanner. A drive cycle can take up to 50 miles or more. |
