I am switching to electronic distributor, but first, I get 6 volts at coil when ignition on, 12 volts when cranking, then 6 volts again when running. Is this right?, and if so, do I need 12 volts constant for electronic dizzy and where do I get it from? Thanks Frank.

You will need 12 volts all the time.
The 12 volts while cranking is coming from the wire to the solenoid on the starter. You can keep that if you want.

The wire from the firewall to the coil has to be replaced. The original is a resistor wire.
You can run a separate wire to the coil, bypassing the original.Just disconnect it.

Thank you John for your reply. My car was converted to right hand drive in the early 80s, so under dash is very messy with extended wires etc. So where does the resistor wire start from & what colour is it? Thanks Frank.

The wire usually starts on the engine compartment side of the firewall connector.
Not sure of the color off hand, think it's black with white stripe?

It should be the wire that goes from the coil towards the firewall.

Frank:

The resistor wire starts at the bulkhead connector at the dash panel. It is black and is labeled it's entire length as resistor wire. I converted my 74 SD-455 car to a Unilite module in the distributor which requires 12V constant. I disconnected the bulkhead connector and unterminated the resistor wire for the insulator. I replaced it with a new black wire of the same gauge with a new terminal on each end. Plugged everything back together and put it all back into the convolute. You cannot even tell any work was done. This may seem excessive to some people, but to me, it makes the job look perfect.
