Has anyone found a way on early second generation firebirds, to increase the brightness or contrasts of the dash lights?

For instance, coating the metal housing with chrome paint? Differint lights?

Thanks
Chuck

Hi Chuck!
Sorry I can't answer your question. I was hoping you could answer mine! How much trouble is it to change dash light bulbs? If it's another nightmare to deal with I'll leave mine alone. If it's not too hard (my seats are already out for the new carpet) I'd like to change the bulbs in my 76 TA to the red that are in my 79 TA.

I'm just finishing a two year restore and engine rebuild on the 76. I can't tell you the crazy problems I've run into, but I do love my TA's. The 79 is stock and the 76 has a new 871 BDS blower and just about everything new.

The dash lights aren't that hard to replace. They are just twist in lights on the back side of the gauge cluster. Pontiac claimed that you could replace a bulb in less than 30 seconds(in the owners manual)by removing the access panel under the steering column and reaching up behind the gauges. That only works if you have VERY small hands ...

Best way is to remove the woodgrain/engine turned bezel in front of the gauges. Then disconnect the electrical plug and speedo cable, remove the four screws that hold the gauge cluster and pop it out.

Regarding the color of the backlight on the gauges. The bulbs are CLEAR. The inside of the gauge pod and the backside of the gauges is painted with a reflective greenish/blue or red paint. Mostly the Special Editions from 79-81 had the red backlit gauges. I'm not sure how easy it would be to convert a green backlit to red

Chuck, did you try turning the headlight knob all the way to the right to the position just before the dome light turns on? If the gauges are still too dark the rheostat in the headlight switch assembly might be faulty. Might try swapping in a different switch.

thanks for all the tips. The best thing I did was to take the gauge package apart and spray the inside chrome high gloss silver. It was great and probably 50% brighter. I have been toying with changing the gauges to white and then red bulbs, but we will see.

Sally, I woould love to see a pic of the car.

Chuck I have a set of white faced gagues right here. The odometer is also set back to 00000. Let me know what you think. I am not putting them in my 74 so they are on the market to be sold. If anybody wants them, make me an offer and we will go from there.

CHuck! Thanks for the dash light answer. I'm going to leave the lights alone for now and just get my machine on the road! Had hoped to make TA nationals this week-end but my TA isn't done. Oh well next year! I'll Email you a pic when it's done...probably two more weeks. Thanks again! Sally
