Default Clevite or Federal Mogul Bearings?

I pulled out the 463 for routine maintenance and inspection. My bearings are showing a little wear from racing and occasional nitrous use. The crank looks great but I'll measure everything today.

With that said, the motor currently has Clevite bearings in it -.010 crank and -.020 rod. Looking on Butler, they are twice the price as the FM bearings. KRE doesn't even list Clevite bearings, only FM. Is there a quality difference between the two to justify the price difference?

When FM moved all their bearing production to Mexico, the oil clearances were not as consistent as the older USA production. I like the design, 3/4 groove and thrust faces of the FM bearings however. In the last 8-10 years I have been using King bearings because of their quality and consistent oil clearances.

Another consideration for any bearing how hard it’s surface layer is which is a factor in allowing dirt to embed in the bearing and not chew up the journal it’s rotating on.

So how many of you all redrill the main oil hole to match the block?

I do, and I also open up the Vee groove that passes the oil from the block oil passage into the hole that feeds the bearings.

The area of that Vee groove formed by the factory drilling process is less then the oil passage hole.

John I do not currently have a block apart, but I found this picture.
Look at the thrust bearing oil feed hole and you will see how the Vee groove is a restriction.

You will need a 1/4” Ball head burr to grind it out.

I always do it also. Ever wonder why the bearing companies don't locate it in the best spot to begin with?

Correct!
It needs to ground out to a bit bigger the the oil passage that feeds it off of the main galley from the filter return.

Steve, does that mean that the figure 8 ends up looking more like an oval, or is the v groove just ground down deeper.?

Ia2a oil holes just for reference
FM .010 bearing will be opened up to help flow
But I wouldn’t loose sleep over it the area of the slot is probably more then large enough to compensate for the obstruction

And the IA2A has an oil hole through the front main stud for an accessory feed like a turbo.

Yes I haven’t looked at an iron ia2 yet but o don’t think the oil passes thru the stud on an iron ia2 curious why I assume strength and desire to leave extra material
In the area same reason the outer
main fasteners are studs and not bolts
