Default Transmission Stencil/Code

Can anyone tell me what letters would have been stenciled onto a Muncie M-20 transmission? 1969 car. Was it a light yellow color? Where would the stencil be on the transmission?

thats the vin derivative stamping, to me thats not a stencil. If I'm reading this correctly, he's asking about the 2 letter code that is in ink on the main case. I don't have my book in front of me, but Eric White's GTO/GT-37 book lists the information you seek.

Default Yellow Stencil

Thanks John. I have the VIN, however, I am looking for the right 2 letter yellow code that would have been lightly stenciled onto the transmission case. Again, thank you for the help.

That should be in the factory assembly manual. I'll check this morning if no one else answers.

From Eric's GTO/GT-37 book, a 1969 GTO M20 would have had a two-letter code of "FO" stenciled on top of the main case.

HTH!

Default Stencil

Thanks Lloyd. I believe that was a 2" stencil?

FYI--I will be photographing the head bolts and posting tonight or tomorrow.

The stencils (pick codes for the assembly line workers) are supposed to be on the top of the transmission and could not be seen when the trans was installed in the car. many restorers put the two letter stencil codes on the passenger side of the trans so that judges and people that are viewing the cars can see them.

My M40 had a two-letter code (PQ) in pink letters and looked like it was applied with a big rubber stamp. Letters were about 3-inches high.

Here's the original off my '71, turquoise PQ had a line in front of the PQ that looked like the edge of a rubber stamp that got the paint on it also and transfered. I actually traced it out on a piece of paper so I could reproduce it correctly. Manual trans may have been on the top, but as you can see this was more down the side....DW

Here's mine after I made a rubber stamp and re-applied the code. Mine was pink.

That's exactly where I found the markings on the automatic convertible Judge I owned at one time. It seems the autos were more down the side like you state and the manuals were on top.

Nice detail work BTW

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but color black did you use on your firewall/heater box/frame? I have the entrie front clip and suspension out of my '70 Judge (was all painted a high-gloss black by previous owner) and want it to look correct (your's looks great).

Frank

Frank, thank you. I used a good urethane enamel and went about 50/50 with the flattener and shot it with a good gun. It was trial and error as far as the amount of flattener but I think it looks about right. The frame and A-arm are actually rather dusty in that picture. Those underhood components should not be gloss black.

Here's another shot. I messed up the air cleaner lid (dust) and had to re-shoot it. Top of the dash is flat black.

And if you were trying to replicate that with a rattle-can, any suggestions? I have heard that the heater box and fenderwells and frame should be same gloss, and the firewall should be less glossy.

Krylon makes a "Semi-Flat" black rattle can that looks right for that kind of stuff.
