I have been in the transmission business since 1975. I ran my own trans shop from 1984-2017. I now run a small shop in the suburbs of Boston where I specialize in vintage transmission and do vintage car repairing.

I repair, modify restore old lights for major and small films, old buildings & just everyday people etc. I've got tons of old lights and parts to draw on to refinish stuff that gets brought in. Every job is different.

Some years ago, Tom Hanks was directing the series "The Pacific". I think it was called "Band of Brothers" in the US? It was filmed here in Melbourne. I did a heap of work on that. Restored a couple of Tom's own lamps used in the film and about a year back he sent me a few original lamps from the US to redo and then send them back. Paid me so he must have been happy.

I don't say retired, because I would do it again in the right context: TelCom Engineer, Outside Plant.

Current, but no real money potential, just fun: Personal Fitness Trainer.

Started as a carpenter helper when I was 16, continued building houses and then commercial construction. I am now vice president of operations for a small general contracting design build company. We do a lot of work on hospitals, clinics, and industrial manufacturing and warehouse buildings.

Linux Systems Engineer. Current company provides real time tracking, billing and performance data to the North American Freight Railroad system. I never realized the amount of data collected on rail systems and how important it is to keep trains moving!

I put in control systems for automated manufacturing. Make things like 25/30mm ammo for military, roof tiles, chief boyardee, condiments for fast food and many many other things.

According to my calculations (assuming 5% average interest), I'm getting my own money back until about age 81- so I won't be "on the dole" until 2021.

Sorry Eric, I know that wasn't the answer you wanted...

1958-1963 as a college-level apprentice at GE (9 months tool & die, 3 months drafting, 6 months basic electronics) while enrolled in BSEE at S.U. (with extra M.E. courses thrown in). Last 3 years at GE as an engineering technician in the electron optics lab (kids who don't know of CRTs give me a funny look when I talk about electron guns I designed!). USAF flight simulator specialist 3 years in Germany (actually drove 2 laps of Nuerburgring!). 11 years with Stromberg-Carlson in advance development. My group successfully patented the first computer-controlled switching system- which we designed and demonstrated- including building a mini-computer from scratch. That's where I got into software engineering, since I had to write a symbolic assembler for the unique machine language of our mini. When Stromberg left NYS eight of us engineers formed Redcom Labs. I quit as Redcom staff engineer in 1984 to become self-employed, contracting back to them until 1990. Varied self-employment since then- custom machining, video store owner, VCR repair shop, landlord, etc.
[Redcom is going strong with about 250 employees and still privately held. I've enjoyed good $$$ dividends on my founders' stock in recent years, and my BSEE son is a "strategist" for them.]

Wow, from a machinist to fixing VCR's. You've been all over the board. Very cool. I like it when someone is always willing to learn something then move on to learn something else. I find life very boring when someone does only 1 job, trade, whatever, their whole life. I have been in the automotive field pretty much my whole life but I believe I have been apart of every aspect. Congrats
