Adaptor plates have been used for decades and on all combinations. Don't over-think it. The biggest issue is that you will be using spacers between the converter and flexplate. Again, nothing to be concerned about, its done every day.

I made one out of thin steel plate. All you have to do is make the holes in the right place & weld 2 nuts on to the plate.
Doesn't need to be a thick plate. The the spacer washers need to be 1/2 the thickness of the plate. When using a thin plate, stock length dowel pins will work. If you go with a really thick plate, longer dowels may be needed. Jegs sells 'em. You can look at the pics & see how easy it would be to make one. Hey, if I can do it, most anybody can. https://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/60172/10002/-1 Looks like the Jegs plate has 4 nuts welded on to it. If I remember correctly, the lower nuts do not have to be welded. I think you can put a nut on those bolts by hand. But, I suppose 4 welded nuts would just make things a little easier. ponyakr , The the spacer washers need to be 1/2 the thickness of the plate. Why only half the thickness? I would have thought ...use the same thickness to keep the distance the same!

I don't really know the max safe distance you could pull the converter out of either side. There are probably some experts here who could tell us the max safe numbers. Last edited by ponyakr; 11-24-2018 at 03:41 PM. |

You only want 1/8" to 3/16" of clearance between the converter and the flex plate before bolting them together.
This insures you have enough engagement of the converter snout into the pump in the trans. Pulling it out any further than that may allow the tangs on the pump to disengage from the slots in the converter snout and damage the pump. When using an adapter plate you must use converter to flex plate spacers that are the same thickness as the the adapter plate.

"...When using an adapter plate you must use converter to flex plate spacers that are the same thickness as the the adapter plate."
So, you're saying that you think even 1/6" is too much to pull the converter forward ? How far can you safely pull the converter out of the crank ? |

If you are speaking of the snout of the converter that centers on the pilot hole of the crank, it probably depends on the converter. Some race converters have a longer snout/sleeve to fit in it. Factory I would think it is about what b-man says? (maybe even a 1/4"?) That's why a thin adapter plate would be better.

so far i'm $600 into this, with the trans and plate.I bought a new convertor last year for the 80 with a t400,the trans took a poop soon after [sitting for 20 years]..so I will flush the convertor and use it.And I have 2.5 gallons of trans fluid left from a 5 gal pail when installed the t400.

I just welded some mounting bosses on the top of a 700R-4 and bolted it right to my Pontiac block. The dowel pins and lower bolt holes are the same for either transmission. It went 10's many years like this, now it is about to be rebuilt and go in my 84 C-10 with P350 motor.

man, I was just about to post my Pontiac Th350 for sale as I am pulling & selling the 400 engine & tranny. It’s been rebuilt with a mild shift kit, a slightly increased stall converter and a deep cast aluminum B&M pan. I was thinking $400 picked up or $500 shipped so do you guys think that’s fair price? I don’t mean to be rude or crash your thread but since it was a relative topic I figured I would ask you guys. Thanks
