Default Trans Am dash bezels restoration

Has anyone recently used Trans Am dash bezel, (Randy Combs) to restore their bezel?
I have 5 that I need restored and was wondering about the promised time to return and the quality of the work.
I was quoted 150.00 each and that seems a little cheap for the work that needs to be done based on his you tube video.
I am getting ready to send these and just wanted to check to see what members opinions are.

Thanks for any help you can give as these are all early bezels and replacing these would be quite costly.

All the work I've seen him do looks top notch!

I plan on using his service soon. I have a few bezels I need done.

About a year ago I sent an early bezel to Randy to be restored. When it was done he sent me pictures of it and it looked perfect. He shipped it to me via the USPS, and they must have stacked something heavy on it, because they crushed the box, which severely damaged the bezel. I called Randy and he immediately told me to send it back to him and he would repair or replace it as needed. I sent the bezel back and he said he was able to repair it. I figured there was no way the bezel could be straightened, but when it came back it looked like new. Randy took care of everything at no charge. He does first rate work at a very reasonable price, and I wouldn't hesitate to do business with him again.

I am unaware of anyone who repairs the woodgrain dash inserts;
for at least the first four years (70-73) they were different every year;
They are a similar construction, but instead of a machined finish, they essentially have an overlay;
As far as I know, the overlay is not repairable.

When my woodgrain started to appear to delaminate, I started a search for a suitable replacement;
I was able to buy one from a member here.

It's not too hard to find a decent woodgrain dash, just have to match the options, and year. Apart from cutouts the woodgrain type also changed a few times over the years as some became dated on previous models. You may have to use a heatgun to get the overlay to curve around openings and stay they, or deform to the cig lighter surround.

Is it possible to take an original wood grain bezel, remove the overlay, and turn it into a engine-turned Trans Am bezel?

Yes it can. I have heard that the metal is thicker than T/A bezels.

I would think this would be easiest for 1973+ dash inserts;
The 1970-1972 non-TA dash inserts had a formed gauge surround with a thin plastic trim ring;
The 1970-1972 Trans Am's had the insert flat at openings and used a large plastic surround which essentially became the same part used on all dash inserts starting with model year 1973.
(let's for a breif moment ignore the early TA chromed gauge surrounds)

I would think this would be different in the heater area too.

Randy Combs discussed the Wood grain to engine turned bezel on another site years ago.
IIRC the base metal was stainless and required more abrasive material than the aluminum.

I checked his web page and there is no listing for that conversion at this time.

You could call or email to see if he would take on the job.

x2 the material is different and the effect is different, possibly not as neat. With so many turned dashes produced and still around there's little reason to use one. I think it may have been due to a rare gauge option that was hard to find so decided to test one, while still looking.

The heater controls are a separate bezel, the grain would rarely match as it was still random.

I don't think i've noticed the area around the rally gauges on early models shown here, certainly was gone by mid-years. So that's another area where a heat gun would be needed to work it around the curves. I have a custom RHD facia so it's similar idea, but not working with the factory parts. Also, the main gauge holes seem to have that raised lip where the black plastic rings mount, on later years that was gone also.

I learned something new today. Sure as unruhjonny said earlier, the bezel and trim rings are different. All these years sitting right in front of my face and I never realized the subtle difference. That's why I enjoy and appreciate this forum. Thanks Guys!
The Trans Am bezel is aluminum and the others are steel. (note rust)

Sounds like Randy is going to get busy soon.
