I looked into doing it, its common and supposedly a pretty simple swap.

The car fly's with the 3800 SC motor it's an easy sway, like it was made for them. You can easy get 400 hp out of that motor,

I have had a 300 hp sbc 355 in mine for the last 20 years. Makes for a fun little go cart. I’d still rather drive the gto.

Seems like that would understeer wicked with the extra weight, but maybe the short wheelbase lessens that issue.

Its not a problem until the rear breaks loose, then you can’t recover. It was that way with the 2.5 also. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro |

I had a 88 Fiero 4 cyl 2.5, 5 speed stick that I had to make an evasive move on dry concrete (someone changed lanes from stalled traffic in the off ramp into my lane). As much driving experience as I've had on snow, racing for years on dirt tracks, and autocrossing. I even drove Go Karts on dirt before I had my drivers license. I could not keep up with the steering and ended up spinning the car around at about 50-60 MPH. I was absolutely amazed I ended up facing the wrong way on the interstate. After an emergency lane change, the rear end came around so quickly there was no saving it. I had owned the car for 2 years at that time and had logged about 70,000 miles on it on ice, snow, wet roads and I never felt I couldn't control it in an emergency like that, it took me totally by surprise...….. The end result, I hit another car in the line of stalled traffic and the moron that pulled in front of me without looking, just drove off down the road without a scratch. Luckily there were witnesses that stuck around, that told the cops the same story I did, so I wasn't charged with reckless operation. The Fiero was drivable, but the left pop up head lamps were junk. I ended up selling it shortly after the accident. That was the second Fiero I owned, so I had driven them for a few years, but never encountered the not being able to keep the rear from swapping ends before that incident. |
