Doug N 1965 Supercharged GTO
A little "boost history" with a Picture of Doug Noradin's (Global West Owner)
1965 GTO with the Vortech "Prototype" Blow-thru Carb (driver's side) A/C INTER-COOLED induction system. Just the one photo, but it was the first Supercharged Vortech Pontiac Vehicle they ever did. At the time the demand was low for Boosted Engines and Pontiac Powertrains. Enjoy. Tom V.

Is the intercooler water cooled?

Looks like its a/c cooled. Thanks for sharing Tom.
Maybe not, I cant follow the lines in the picture, but I think I see an a/c compressor in there...

The car was not inter-cooled with the A/C Compressor but I did do several other boost systems with that A/C cooling provision.
https://patents.google.com/patent/US20030098011 Tom V. More info here: https://www.hagerty.com/articles-vid...that-never-was Coletti's A/C Chiller system he called the "Super Cooler". I wrote the patent revisions for that concept so that he could get the credit for putting it on the truck. Myself and 3 other guys actually did the installation and design work. Colletti was a Chief Engineer, he never touched the vehicles during a build. Here is the patent # for the Super Cooler system that I rewrote for him to get it approved. U.S. patent 6006540A in 1996. It typically takes 3 years for a Patent to get approved. it was approoved in 1999. FCA designed a system a few years ago based on the original 1996 work. "FCA confirmed the Super Cooler’s worth by adding a version it calls Power Chiller to their 840-hp Challenger SRT Demon.” So the Technology IS "out there" but not new news. 1996, 2006, 2016, 2020. (24 years later). Tom V. Colletti Patent link: https://patents.google.com/patent/US6006540A/en (You will notice that no one else is mentioned on the patent. )

That's very cool (no pun intended).
Much more compact than an air-to-air cooler. K

It worked well but the A/C Inter-cooler robbed any cooling going to the passenger compartment and used it to cool the intake charge.
When we did the Hydrogen Buses with the Lysholm Supercharger and the A/C inter-cooling, the engine had two a/c compressors, Keith, and both the engine and the passengers at the airports were happy. Tom V.

But those last few posts just answered Scott65's question.
The thread is really about Doug's prototype Vortech Supercharged/Inter-cooled 65 GTO. Tom V.

Anyone remember the guy on here about 20 years ago with the 2nd gen. Firebird with the 14-71 up top and a custom built intercooler between it and the intake manifold that was cooled by the A.C. compressor? I recall he put the car up for sale and then just disappeared. Car too.

I remember that Car Brian. The Inter-cooler position and mounting was similar to the inter-cooler system that Gale Banks used on the Geisler 1953 Studebaker "Land Speed Record" car. Roots Blower and BB Chevy Engine.
The different being, Brian, that Gale Banks and Bruce Geisler used water vs the A/C System and the A/C system would quickly be over-come by the induction temps on the "Long Course" (7 miles). There is a LONG recovery time with the A/C system. Tom V.

I found some data we ran on the Dearborn Ford Proving Ground with a A/C Inter-cooled Mustang Cobra with a 4.6L engine (281 cid) that made 780 rear wheel HP on a chassis Dyno in Jackson, Michigan.
It would take almost 4 minutes for the A/C System to recover so we could do another Quarter Mile pass. No so good for street racing but probably would be great for a Bracket Drag Car where you could make a pass and the be ready for another pass without adding chilled water or ICE from the 7/11 store constantly thru out the day. So on some applications it would have some benefits. Not cheap to put together and make work properly though. You could buy 5 years worth of ice for what the A/C Chiller component costs along with a Junkyard A/C System fabbed up. Tom V.
