Default O-ring receiver groove versus regular MLS head gaskets

I recently did a leak down on my motor. I was pleasantly surprised with my findings. My current motor is o-ring/receiver groove and I have approximately 20 chassis dyno hits and 12 passes (5 of which are 1/4-mile) at the track. The motor saw between 24lbs-27lbs of boost on any given run depending on atmospheric conditions and whether or not it was a 1/4-mile or 1/8-mile pass. Here are my results:

1- 3%
3- 13%
5- 14%
7- 3%

2- 3%
4- 17%
6- 15%
8- 10%

With my previous motors, I utilized MLS head gaskets and was changing them 20-30 passes, depending on the amount of boost I was making. On average, the motor was leaking down in the range from 30%-40%+ after 20+ passes. I could re-torque the heads and might get another 5 or so passes before I started loosing more ET and MPH.

Just thought I would share my results and if you are on the fence as to whether or not you are going to go o-ring/receiver groove or MLS...I would go the o-ring deal. Just my

I'm curious, is this a methanol engine? How much leakage are you willing to accept before refreshening?

Sorry forgot to add...I'm on Q16 and 1/2" head studs. Also, there are no "inserts" in between the center cylinders.

Typically, anything over 30% I'm putting new gaskets on.

The copper gasket, o-ring and receiver groove has worked well on a multitude of high pressure applications. For what its worth, Usually pull 'em down when leakage goes over 15%. Zero gap top rings go along way keeping leakage in check over the long term.

Have you tried Titan head gaskets?

If you don't mind answering a few more questions to complete the picture? Do you run coolant in the engine? If yes, are you running coolant through the block to the heads or dry deck? Also, is your receiver groove in the block or the heads? Finally, are you using .041" wire or .070" or some other diameter? Thanks for the info.

I have not tried them. I use SCE gaskets.

No problem.

I do run water through the motor and the head, but I am dry decked. I come out of the back of the block and cross over to opposing side of the head.

I believe the wire is .041".

I have always had good luck with copper gaskets and O-ring wire. Only exception is running anti-freeze in a street/strip situation. I think that's where the MLS gaskets really shine. The ridges and bridges around the water and oil holes on OHC designs really seal water and oil very well. For sealing compression, copper and O-rings is hard to beat.

ICS Titan is made by SCE. I've used them, they worked well. SCE was in the middle of a relocating when I was looking to order a set. I couldn't wait, so I'm trying Flatout this time.
