534 YC coded Dport 455's went into 1971 GTO's.
Have owned two, & parted on three other 71 Dport 455 GTO's. Out of those was another Fremont build with a Sienna interior. The factory installed 455 Dport engine in a '71 or 72 GTO is more of an oddity than a desirable rarity. The invoice copy on this one has a few more factory installed options (PW & rally guages) than one normally sees on a 455 Dport GTO.

I bought a bunch of parts off of one about 30 years ago. It was at a tow company, I tried to buy the whole car but the company didn't want the headache associated with getting a title. It was a heavily optioned Lucerne Blue car with the 15" wheels option, had been hit in the rear. It still had the original engine in it.

Why are 71 or 72 D port engines an oddity?

I think the question would be 455 in a GTO?
The HO was probably not much more than the 455, so why not go for the extra HP? (The 455 & 455 HO were extra cost options on the GTO)

I like that castillian bronze color. I'm guessing that the d port 455 was 325 hp a step below the round port H/O 455 335 hp? It kinda makes the car unique but not as desirable

While price wise in a '71 GTO, the '71 L75 was positioned just slightly more than the standard L78 400 400 Dport engine, the factory straight line performance of the '71 & 72 L75 455 Dport GTO was not that impressive. While the low CR 455 possessed slightly more torque, a stock '71 or '72 L75 M40 GTO typically would not keep up on the street with a good shifting driver in a 400 4 spd '71 GTO w 3.55's. Many '71 & 72 L75 GTO's were bought as family transportation & quite a few even had trailer hitches added in order to pull a small runabout boat. When the HP & torque ratings were changed to NET for '72 models, the L78 400 4bbl & L75 455 4bbl were both rated @ 250 net hp (not that much difference in stock head flow between 66's & 7M5's). In the 90's, I also parted on a heavy loaded '72 Lux LeMans 455 2 door hardtop (1 of 71). That particular Lux LeMans was special ordered by the owner of a large family owned pharmacy. Over 30 option car, in my records have a buildsheet copy as well as the protect-o-plate. Also encountered & removed considerable parts from a 14 option '72 455 Lux LeMans 2 door hardtop in S Texas.

Over 30 options that combined far surpassed the cost to have ordered a Judge optioned convertible on that Lucy Blue GTO. 43, 1971 455 GTO Convertibles produced with Automatic / 0 Manual. trans. Even lower numbers for 455 HO manual (27) and auto (21) convertible cars. |

I've saved 2 1971 455 GTOs from the crusher in the 1980s , built, drove and sold them. Nice cars. These 455 GTOs returned to pressed in rocker studs which always surprised me. GTOs had not had pressed in studs since 1966. All the d port 455 GTOs were automatics too. The engine, as mentioned, was a very low cost option. Just adding my experiences.
One was Cardinal red , the other Aztec gold. When rebuilding them, I repainted both the original colors. A later owner of the gold one had it repainted Cardinal red. Have not seen or heard of either in about 30 years but, am sure they are still out there somewhere.
