Update: I was lucky enough to find a set of heads on a 350 that was in a '77 Grand Prix with a 6X cast into the exhaust ports. These heads have the screwed in rocker studs and seem to have pretty big valves. The junkyard charged $100. Was that a good deal ?

Excellent deal, those heads can sell for twice that amount.

Nice find, the 350 that has the 6X-4 heads you need.

Thats a good deal. Just be prepared to dump 600-800$ on those heads. They will probably need new valve guides, valve seat job, new valves...

Heve them magnaflux before to make sure they are not cracked. Junkyard stuff is junkyard stuff...

That pretty much applies to any head thats currently in "core" condition. If you are indeed going to purchase valves, I would have the exhaust opened up to a 1.77 and depending on cam choice you could use the earlier longer valves for more spring height. That will also require a longer pushrod. Or, you could send them to SD and for close to what you will spend in new valves, springs, retainers, keepers, valve job, guides, surfacing and have whats listed below.

CNC Street port D-port heads (available for 670, 16, 62, 46, 47, 48, 11, 12, 13, 17, 18, 96, 7K3, 4X, 5C, 6X and other castings). Includes everything above, plus fully CNC ported 250 cfm @ .550” lift @ 28” intake ports, fully CNC ported exhaust ports, Comp Cams 995-16 valve springs, spring cups or locators are installed for increased spring stability and longevity, ARP 7/16” rocker studs, pushrod holes notched for 1.65 rockers, flow chart included. Complete package using customers cores from $1345.00 or complete package including SD supplied cores starting from $1645.00 (core charges vary with casting numbers - please call for availability and pricing)
Most mild street applications will experience an easy 50+hp gain over stock heads and even more with more aggressive combo's!!!

Additonal Options for above heads

Fill exhaust crossovers with aluminum add $60.00

Call for more details.

$ 1345.00

$ 1533.30

You can buy brand new E-Heads for that amount. Buy a new set of heads that will give you the extra you need for the same price as the last guy posted. The price of the new E-heads that are 87 cc heads ready to bolt on & are round port heads for $ 1800.00 or you can buy the new D-port heads for $ 100.00 less & bolt them right on & go.

I would take a correctly ported set of D's over an out of box E head all day long for street use. The only advantage I have seen over the years is the E head has more room for port work if the owner chooses to do so.

Yes but with a fully ported set od cast iron D-port heads your all done & with a new set of Alum. E-heads you have a lot of room to grow if you want. If you just bolt on a set of E-heads compared to a set of stock iron heads there is no comparison & the E-heads are a lot lighter to start with plus lighter weight means faster car. Dollor for dollor the E-heads are still a better bet..

Which is why I said this:

"The only advantage I have seen over the years is the E head has more room for port work if the owner chooses to do so."

It's all bolted together and in the engine bay now. I did end up with a 45K mile '76 455 out of a Bonneville locally. Some old guy had it stored in a barn for over 30 years after it was crashed in the side. A derby guy just hauled the body off. The engine is amazingly clean on the inside .

Yep, good price and hopefully stamped with the #4 , I see they got redone ready to go for $300 more. Great upgrade to "fix" the '76 455 and bring it back to the muscle car era power.

Thats just not true, HO and SD may have something to say about that.. LOL

Why bother with a 70 #64 when a 6X-4 is much more common , cheaper and only 2-5 CC's larger in chamber if any. If there is concern for max flow add the 1.77 to the exhaust. Ported to Ported there wouldnt be much difference and the 6X -4 is made for Unleaded Fuel already... It pushed the CR as high as can be tolerated for a street 455 on 93 with iron heads anyway.

I am talking about Factory D port heads. Yes HO and SD
Do flow better but you will pay $2,500 and up for a set.
70 64 are the only high compression heads Pontiac made.

They also made the more common 70 #15 (Bonneville) it is the same compression ratio (10:1) as the #64 (GP and GTO) very little different between them. 360 hp versus 370 hp

Common Knowledge

Something else to remember, The earlier heads do not have five bolt bolt holes to mount the later power steering pump and alternator.
