I am in need of a trunk lid torsion rod. Before I start my search, I need some help. The correct answers will provide me with some facts & should assure that I get the correct part.
- I know the torsion rods are heavier/stronger to support a lid with a spoiler. Are these rods universal to other Mid size GM'S that also have spoilers?
- Are they model year specific, or were there several years that used the same rod?
-Can you identify a heavier/ stronger rod by the diameter, or do the all look the same?
- Do you know of someone who has one for sale?
Thanks .... Greg

The torque rod does slightly bigger. 1970 Judge required only the heavy-duty rod on the left side only, part number 8733945, hardtop and 7765576, convertible.

The 1969 both rods were bigger. Hardtop, right side 8790659, left side 8790660. Covertible, 8790132 right, 8790133 left.

Could someone send me a picture of what teh rod looks like mounted?

I'm in search of a 70 GTO & if I come across a car labeled as a Judge & has a rear spoiler among other things, when it comes to this rod, I'd like to know what it looks like so I know what I'd be looking for/at.

Thanks.

BTW, I've been to Seans site, but alas, no pics of a trunk torsion rod.

All Gto's have the rods in the trunk, but Judges have either one or both of them thicker. Im not sure if its obviously thicker to the naked eye or not. Never seen one personally. These are the rods that run from one hinge to the other in the trunk under the rear window. According to Glenn the 70 Has a thicker one on the left side only, so if you find one with 2 different thickness rods, that would be a plus.

...and all this time I've been setting the rods on their most tense setting, with hit or miss results.

Here are a couple of pictures of the torsion rods. It is hard to tell but the drver side rod is slightly larger.

This is the drivers side rod.

I looked at my friends Judge and can say this. Both rod were hooked into the farthest in slots (toward the back seat). The rod that was slotted into the driver side measured .300" and the passenger side measured .320". I was just wondering if they were color-coded somehow? The ones I looked at showed no part numbers stamped in them, but looked like they may have had paint dabs (other than the trunk splatter paint).

Theres a rare find on ebay right now for a pair of the rods from a 69 judge. If they are the real deal you may want to check into it. Heres the link:http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=1873441313

I recently sold an nos '71 Judge trunk rod to a friend of mine. All that I recall is that it had a Lavender colored paint dab on it, along with the pn tag. I could probably get measurments if it is critical, as I believe that he still has it. Ron.

Does anyone know the repo spoiler compares to the original as far as weight goes. The repo seems very very light. I am going to install it without any change in the rods, and will post what happened.

My understanding is that the rod must provide enough twisting resistance to prevent the trunk lid from closing on its own?

One of the repro spoilers is very light & will work easily with stock torsion bars. This was cheap one even JC Whitney sold/sells?. Believe there have been 3 different repro '70-71 Judge rear spoilers & other two are heavier.

Different weight original "70" judge spoilers. Was chatting with longtime Judge restorer on the phone the other night & he made assertion that early '70 Judges used a different (lighter) spoiler than later '70's & the '71's. His Judges were built in mid Nov of '69 & had the lighter factory spoiler. He had NOS to compare with as well as original. Also quizzed him if original, & all his spoilers had separate style "legs" or stands with seams around attachment area. In comparing my nos GM (late 80's) rear spoiler to original April '70 orbit orange spoiler, noted they were the same weight on same scales.

The repo spoiler I have is the new one that allegedly needs very little prep prior to installation. Retails for about $239??

It will be on the car within the month, so I will post the results of what happens.

The "Parts Place" spoiler is now on my '69 hardtop, and the trunk stays open just fine with the stock rods.

We also installed a Parts Place 70 spoiler on a 70 GTO with the same results.
