The radiator is out at the radiator shop being checked out and I am working on brakes. In the process of upgrading to a dual chamber master cylinder. When I removed the old single chamber unit the base of the brake fluid cavity was covered with a black greasy substance and the brake fluid looked terrible. Could this have come from deterioration of the black rubber incorporated in the cap or is there something more sinister going on? Any suggestions other than a complete flush along with replacing all wheel cylinders, only one is leaking. Thanks, Bob

That black gunk is just from the rubber parts deteriorating over time, nothing more sinister than that.

X 2. Time to rebuild or replace the wheel cylinders and flexible brake hoses along with flushing the system.

Welcome to the Darkside. As a rule, in rebuilding/restoring Big Car Ponchos I drain and refill the rear axle assembly. If you have posi-trac add the GM additive. Also, when taking the car out for a test drive, turn on the lights and as you drive along grab the light switch and see if it is getting warm. If it is, first replace the dimmer switch. When the dimmer goes bad it wrecks hell on the light switch.
My experience is the dimmers are easily available and inexpensive so I replace them anyway. If dashboard lights are dim, just clean the rheostat on the light switch. Have fun with the Poncho. Jim

Thanks for the replies. I Have already done the rear axel and will be working on the brakes this week end. Also just discovered that the power seat doesn't move. The lights will dim and I will get a click. Is this a dead motor? Thanks for all the help. Bob

In the early years I was into Cadillac's and employed a restoration specialist assisting me doing my own cars. I was on the show circuit with several early Cadillac's showing in the CCCA and AACA. I got tired of this around 1990 and started restoring for fun doing all the mechanical work myself along with touring with various groups. Right now I an working on the 64 Bonneville and a 73 Centurian convert. Also getting the 41 Cad ready for the Glidden tour the 3rd week of September. Helping raise 8 year old triplet grandsons is my first priority which is why I don't get much done some weeks. LIFE IS GOOD.
