Default 1970 GTO 12-Bolt?

It is my understanding is the 1970 GTO only received the 12-bolt rear with the 455. None of the 400 variants got the 12-bolt, they got a 10 bolt. Is this correct?

I have someone telling me the RAIV in the GTO got a 12-bolt. I know that's wrong.

thanks.

came standard with 3:90 optional 4:33. however I did run across a guy who bought his daughter a brand new 69 judge ra4 4 speed and he said and had the paperwork he special ordered it with 3:73 gears and it did have a 12 bolt. so I have always said never say never. back then lots of things were possible if you or the dealer knew the right person.

depends on where the car was built, i believe all canadian abodys got the 12 bolt, and i also thought i read that 12 bolts where an HD option, someone here on this board has a 70 GTO with a 12 bolt in it..he bought the car thinking it was a 455 car, and it wasnt, just a 400..

Only Pontiac usage I've ever run across in 1970 model Pontiac A-body's & GP's were the '70 coded McKinnon built 12 bolts in factory 455 cars & '70 GP's with 400 4spd. Not sure on '70 GPs with 400 & M13 3spd, only have foggy memories of two of those.

For the last 7 or 8 years theres been a misrepresented waaay overpriced McKinnon 12 bolt core on eBay. Listed as special '70 'RA4 usage" the housing of that particular rear is a '69 Mckinion 12 bolt, out of a '69 Canadian built Skylark or Cutlass.

To a lot of people, all GM posi's are 12 bolt due to the Chevy vernacular. I've heard that term thrown around loosely for 40 years.

Me too. My 1970 Oshawa built 400 Judge came with a 10 bolt. My understanding was that only 455 cars got the 12 bolt, as others have mentioned.
